CDO/Assoc VP, Diversity, Equity/Inclusion Job at Pace University
Consistent with Pace’s commitment to the value of inclusion affirmed in its recently developed Strategic Plan, the University seeks an accomplished professional to serve as its Chief Diversity Officer and Associate Vice President of Diversity, Equity, & Inclusion. Reporting to the Chief of Staff within the President’s Office, the Chief Diversity Officer and Associate Vice President of Diversity, Equity & Inclusion will serve as a member of the President’s Senior Leadership Team (Operations Committee), providing leadership and strategic direction in supporting and nurturing a diverse, equitable and inclusive University community. The Chief Diversity Officer and Associate Vice President of Diversity, Equity & Inclusion will shape the vision and direction of diversity, inclusion, and affirmative action programs across all campuses at the University.
Position Duties
- Provides leadership to the Division of Diversity, Equity and Inclusion, and direction to cross-functional teams working on diversity initiatives. Raises the visibility of the University’s diversity efforts using effective marketing and communication strategies. The following departments report to this position:
- The Office of the Chief Diversity Officer (all campus)
- The Office of Institutional Equity and Title IX Compliance (all campus)
- The Office of Sexual and Interpersonal Wellness (NYC)
- The Office of Multicultural Affairs (NYC and PLV)
- The LGBTQA+ Center (NYC)
- The Office of Gender and Sexuality (PLV)
- Collaborates with units across the University to implement best practices related to diversity, equity and inclusion, including those pertaining to recruitment and retention of personnel and students. Works to increase the number, and improve the success of students, faculty and staff from underrepresented groups.
- Leads the implementation, assessment, and revision as needed of the University’s Strategic Diversity Plan. Identifies and pursues opportunities to expand the University’s resources for initiatives consistent with that plan. Clarifies and assesses progress towards diversity goals.
- Leads the development of campus policy and programming pertaining to diversity, equity and inclusion. Develops and delivers training programs to enhance diversity awareness, promote cultural competency and improve responsiveness to diversity issues throughout the university.
- Oversees and, as appropriate, responds to reports of bias-related incidents in collaboration with appropriate University officials. Supervises and supports the executive director of the Office of Institutional Equity and Title IX compliance officer, in ensuring the University’s compliance with federal, state and local laws pertaining to non-discrimination and affirmative action, as well as related university policies.
- Collaborates with Enrollment Management on recruitment initiatives aimed at enhancing diversity in the student body. Works closely with Student Affairs to maintain a welcoming campus environment for all students.
- Ensures ongoing attentiveness to the University’s value of inclusivity through active participation in campus initiatives and on shared governance entities, including the University’s Operations Committee. Monitors campus climate and national trends relevant to diversity and provides responsive leadership.
- Prepares reports and narrative materials relevant to the university’s diversity, equity and inclusion activities. Identifies appropriate metrics for evaluating the success of these activities and effectively communicates outcomes to the University community.
- Strong understanding of shared governance and the ability to work collaboratively across the institution to advance diversity, equity and inclusion as core components of the University’s mission.
- Performs other such duties as assigned from time to time.
Position Qualifications
- An advanced or terminal degree from an accredited higher education institution.
- A minimum of five years of experience in diversity, equity and inclusion, preferably in higher education.
- Demonstrated expertise in best practices in diversity, equity and inclusion.
- Documented knowledge of laws, regulations, policies, and guidance relevant to diversity, equity and inclusion in higher education, including Title IX, and Affirmative Action/EEO.
- Proven ability to initiate and oversee major initiatives and programs in diversity, equity and inclusion.
- Strong understanding of shared governance and the ability to function effectively in a higher education environment.
- Exemplary communication and interpersonal skills.
- Ability to facilitate, mediate and train in area specific topics.
- Strong leadership and management abilities, as well as conflict management and advocacy skills.
- Ability to effectively handle information that is confidential and/or sensitive.
- Demonstrated success in developing and delivering relevant professional development programs.
Work Hours
Monday-Friday, 9AM to 5PM with additional evening and weekend hours as required.
This position is based in New York City, but has university-wide responsibility for diversity and inclusion activities on all campuses (Pleasantville, White Plains, Midtown, and Downtown New York City).
