POSITION SUMMARY

The Communications Officer (Social Media) supports districtwide strategic communications efforts by identifying,

planning, and generating content (news, updates, and stories) for Atlanta Public Schools’ social media channels and is

responsible for daily social media interactivity, posting, and monitoring for the district and superintendent.


The incumbent works closely with the communications team and vendors to produce clear, engaging content about

APS for all audiences. Working in collaboration with the Social Media Coordinator, the incumbent researches,

cultivates and posts content on the district’s platforms that is informative, interesting, and entertaining, and promotes

the district’s goals and initiatives.


The incumbent is highly proficient at optimizing content on all social media platforms, and will assist the Social Media

Coordinator in developing systems and processes that measure channel traffic and engagement data and other key

performance indicators for each of the district’s social platforms.


The ideal candidate is organized with a keen attention to detail, is creative and flexible, can work effectively under

tight deadlines, and is comfortable working independently or as part of a team.


The Communications Officer (Social Media) is expected to provide professional communications counsel as defined by

the Executive Director of Communications. This position requires occasional evening and weekend work hours and

the ability to manage changing priorities in a fast-paced, deadline-driven environment.


MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS


EDUCATION:

  • Bachelors degree in Communications, Marketing, New Media or relevant field required


CERTIFICATION/LICENSE:

  • Valid driver’s license and availability of private transportation, or the ability to attend off-site events.


WORK EXPERIENCE:

  • Four years of full-time work experience (or equivalent) in an agency or in-house communications department, or managing enterprise social media
  • Education communications experience preferred.


KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS & ABILITIES:

  • Advanced knowledge of Google apps, Microsoft Office Suite
  • Proven work experience managing social media accounts across platforms
  • Experience with Sprout Social, Hootsuite, or other social media management tools
  • Knowledge of SEO (search engine optimization), keyword research, and Google Analytics
  • Ability to create multimedia content using social tools
  • Familiarity with social marketing strategies
  • Expert-level copyediting and proofreading skills
  • Ability to quickly produce high quality content
  • Ability to grasp future trends in digital technologies and act proactively
  • Excellent verbal communication skills and attention to accuracy
  • Organized with a keen attention to detail

ESSENTIAL DUTIES

  • Creates engaging posts with content that is timely and relevant, using the best social tools and channels based on the intended audience or type of content
  • Sustains followers’ curiosity and create buzz around positive news and new initiatives
  • Stays up-to-date with emerging trends across social platforms to ensure maximum effectiveness
  • Facilitates online questions and comments, and respond per protocol; Report on online reviews and feedback from stakeholders
  • Maintains social media channel aesthetic in collaboration with design team
  • Suggests new ways to attract followers and increase engagement
  • Provides training and consultative support to school-level communications ambassadors
  • Attends district events on assignment, to provide communications support and social media coverage
  • Collaborates with the editorial team to maintain a year-round social media calendar based on the APS editorial calendar; ideate, prepare, and pitch story ideas for inclusion in the district editorial calendar;
  • Collaborates with the other communication officers, design and video production teams to ensure successful implementation of social media plans
  • Gathers content from the editorial team, edits, and schedules posts based on their editorial work
  • Contributes to the production of communications materials needed for monthly Board of Education meetings
  • Serve on the district’s crisis communications team during school and district emergencies
  • Build and sustains relationships with key education advocates
  • Provide monthly reports and tracking of key social media metrics
  • Required to have prompt, regular attendance in-person or virtually and be available to work on-site, in-person during regular business hours, and as needed.
  • Performs other duties as assigned by an appropriate administrator or their representative

Strength: Ability to lift, push, pull and/or carry objects which weigh as much as 15 or more pounds

on a frequent basis. Environmental Requirements: Ability to encounter constant work interruptions;

work cooperatively with others; work independently; work indoors.

Mental Requirements: Ability to read, write, understand, interpret and apply information at a

moderately complex level essential for successful job performance; math skills at a high school

proficiency level; judgement and the ability to process information quickly; learn quickly and

follow verbal procedures and standards; give verbal instruction; rank tasks in order of importance;

copy, compare, compile and coordinate information and records. Understand how to manage stress


Additional Work Conditions & Physical Abilities: Will require travel to multiple sites.
