The Community Volunteer and Special Projects Coordinator will serve as the point person for employees, physicians and trainees interested in volunteer opportunities that align with the mission of the hospital. This position will also screen and coordinate community volunteers interested in volunteering side-by-side with Lurie Children’s employees, physicians and trainees at community events and with community partners across Chicago. The Community Volunteer and Special Projects Coordinator will help Lurie Children’s meet both employee/physician/trainee engagement and community engagement goals through excellent communications, organization and service to our staff and community partners. This position will also provide project coordination and support on various community health efforts and special projects that align with advancing community engagement. Assists Magoon Institute leadership and support staff with implementation and evaluation of the Magoon Institute strategic plan related to employee/physician/trainee engagement, ensuring alignment with the Community Health Implementation Strategy and organizational goals and mission. Schedule is variable, including nights and weekends to accommodate community events. Flexible, hybrid schedule available with a blend of in office, at home and in the community.

Department Description: The Patrick M. Magoon Institute for Healthy Communities serves as the hub for all community-focused initiatives at Lurie Children’s. The Magoon Institute for Healthy Communities is responsible for aligning the Medical Center’s clinical, research, education and advocacy expertise with community engagement, while supporting people, programs and partnerships that advance community health. This team provides engagement opportunities for employees, physicians and trainees and leads the development and execution of Lurie Children’s Community Health Needs Assessment and Implementation Strategy. The Magoon Institute for Healthy Communities partners with clinical, public health and community outreach leaders and experts across the Medical Center to work towards the goal of advancing health equity and racial justice, and improving health and wellness for infants, children, adolescents and their families across Chicago.

Job Description
Job Duties:
  • Partners with Magoon Institute for Healthy Communities community health programs and community engagement staff, Volunteer Resources and Lurie Children’s Foundation to refine and steward our strategy to engage employees, physicians, trainees and community volunteers interested in community volunteering through the hospital.
  • Enthusiastically communicates volunteer opportunities and community events to employees, physicians, trainees and community volunteers using appropriate communication vehicles, including division/program presentations, email marketing and distribution lists, digital signage boards, the Magoon Institute for Healthy Communities website, and Lurie Children’s All Connect SharePoint site, among others.
  • Serves as liaison between Lurie Children’s and partner organizations in the community that have volunteer opportunities for employees, physicians, trainees and community volunteers that align with our hospital’s mission, including connecting divisions/programs interested in team volunteers service opportunities with community groups that provide larger service opportunities.
  • Develops and maintains survey and database systems to track employee, physician, trainee and community volunteer engagement, community events and engagement activities.
  • Identifies, plans and implements volunteer service events and other community events. Provides coordination and logistical support for day-of-service events, community events and volunteer service opportunities and donor volunteer opportunities in partnership with Lurie Children’s Founders Board and Lurie Children’s Foundation.
  • Prepares written status and summary reports pertaining to the progress, outcomes and impact of employee, physician, trainee and community volunteers’ activities.
  • Provides project coordination and support on various community health efforts and special projects that align with advancing community engagement.
  • Other job functions as assigned.
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:
  • Bachelor's degree required. An equivalent combination of education and/or experience may be considered in lieu of the degree when the experience has been directly related to the duties of the job.
  • Minimum of three years of work experience required. Community engagement, public health and/or healthcare environment work experience preferred.
  • Fluent in Spanish (verbal and written), community knowledge and established community partnerships highly preferred.
  • Strong organizational skills required. Experience independently coordinating projects with ability to establish priorities and manage multiple deadlines preferred.
  • Excellent interpersonal and oral/written communication skills and demonstrated ability to collaborate with individuals from diverse backgrounds and disciplines.
  • Flexibility to work on evenings and weekends, travel throughout Chicago required.
  • Demonstrated ability to work in a large, complex environment.
  • Ability to take initiative and work independently.
