Spuntech in Roxboro, NC is seeking a highly motivated, results-driven candidate to complement our Controls Engineering Department.

The Controls Engineer is responsible for ensuring that the Plant & facility is able to create the best products possible in the safest and most efficient manner. They are highly analytical, capable, methodical and will use these skills to examine and improve processes in order to increase productivity. At the same time, they are responsible for ensuring that all equipment is properly maintained and working correctly. As they perform these functions, Control Engineers must be able to work with other departments and external parties to create and implement processes to increase efficiency while still being capable of working independently to achieve the same goals. They will work with the design, planning, implementation, troubleshooting and maintenance of all plant systems. They need to be creative, adaptive and master multitaskers, being able to draw upon their extensive knowledge of electronics, engineering, programing and mechanics to find solutions to all types of situations. They also need to be excellent communicators as they often are required to work with many departments and external entities to accomplish goals. They also need to be capable in the understanding and use of several different types of software in order to accomplish these tasks while not forgetting the physical devices that are in the field.


The Controls Engineer will:

  • Analyze plant processes, design and implement improvements.
  • Troubleshoot issues with hardware, software and processes.
  • Plan and help implement preventative maintenance.
  • Work with others to detect problems and implement solutions.
  • Work independently towards the same goals.
  • Develop new control and monitoring systems conforming to appropriate standards.
  • Extend start up support and training for control and monitoring systems.
  • Support the implementation and use of different communication systems for manufacturing.
  • Be involved in equipment upgrades and support the start-up of their control systems.
  • Develop, implement and document new PLC systems from concept to qualification.
  • Understand process control issues and develop control solutions to enhance the process along with the Process Engineers.
  • Troubleshoot problems with current PLC control systems.
  • Reverse engineer current systems and programs for performing failure recovery and other improvements.
  • Maintain configuration control of current PLC source code.
  • Offer Controls Engineering support to plant operations and maintenance. At times this includes after hours support.
  • Reply to downtime events impacting production.
  • Troubleshoot Control systems wiring as well as PLC/SCADA logic along with the physical devices.
  • Provide support along with IT in multiple areas, including Programmable Logic Controllers, Human Machine Interfaces, automation, and desktop networks
  • Perform various integration tasks, such as SCADA development, monitoring and improving processes, and collecting data
  • Use design drawings, electrical schematics, and panel layouts to analyze and maintain company systems
  • Manage multiple automation projects, incorporating the following:
    • Review project documentation
    • Communicate effectively with all levels in the organization
    • Develop an understanding of the process being controlled and the requirements for completion
    • Create sequences of operations
    • Direct co-workers and contractors as necessary
  • Be capable of training newer team members to help get them up to speed.
  • Perform any other tasks assigned by the Controls Manager
  • Support the company’s quality and safety initiatives


The Controls Engineer will have:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Controls Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Computer Science, or related field from an accredited University or equivalent documentable experience as a Controls Engineer.
  • 2 years’ experience in Programmable Logic Controllers and Human Machine Interfaces, with Siemens experience a plus (will consider exceptional candidate with Allen Bradley experience)
  • Experience in a continuous process manufacturing facility a plus, but not required
  • Proficiency in reading, writing, and speaking English
