Position Description

Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory is seeking a proactive, collaborative and adaptive Director of Security. Reporting to the VP/Chief Facilities Officer, this role oversees all aspects of the Laboratory’s physical security and emergency action planning functions and in order to develop, lead, oversee, assess, and enhance the Security Department.

Position Responsibilities

  • Directs the overall field operations and administrative duties of all Laboratory security staff. Determines delegations of supervisory responsibilities, recognition, and administration of disciplinary processes.
  • Plans, administers and directs the overall management of the Laboratory’s security function: preparing the budget, ascertaining staffing level needs and deploying staff accordingly, determining appropriate use of overtime, identifying suitable resource utilization, etc.
  • Prepares comprehensive security operations plans; manages ongoing assessments of the status of the Laboratory's entire security program.
  • Perform periodic risk assessments relating to campus safety and security that documents both gaps and performance improvement of the Laboratory’s security functions.
  • Directs, recruits, and selects a workforce that reflects the diversity of the Laboratory community and ensures a work environment respectful of differences.
  • Trains, directs, and supervises full and part-time security officers and lifeguards; including the New York State mandated security training for security officers.
  • Manages and directs all Laboratory security activities; assists with Laboratory events and develops service contact specifications in consultation with other departments as appropriate.
  • Implements and maintains access control systems for all Laboratory buildings, including locks, distribution of keys, computer-controlled locking systems, electronic access systems, and visitor registration.
  • Supervises valet parking services for meetings and special events at the Laboratory and enforces campus parking regulations.
  • Establishes and maintains effective relationships with members of a diverse community including but not limited to faculty, students, staff, and community members.
  • Establishes and maintains a working relationship with the US Federal Bureau of Investigation, Village of Oyster Bay Cove Police Department, Nassau County Police Department, Suffolk County Police Department, Village of Lloyd Harbor Police Department, New York City Police Department, CUNY CityTech Public Safety and other law enforcement agencies that the Laboratory may interact with.
  • Establishes and maintains vendor relationships related to campus safety and security functions.
  • Develops, maintains, and updates the Laboratory’s Emergency Management Plans in unison with the Director of Environmental Health & Safety.
  • Provides the necessary training to Laboratory faculty, students, staff, and visitors, where appropriate, in the various aspects of the Emergency Management Plans.
  • Develops, implements, and maintains fire safety systems in all Laboratory buildings – including but not limited to: fire alarms, fire extinguishers, sprinkler/fire suppression systems, and central station monitoring systems in unison with the Director of Environmental Health & Safety.
  • Maintains and ensures the Laboratory’s radio communications and security equipment is up to date and operational.
  • Member of the Laboratory’s Risk Management Committee and responsible for maintaining/updating the appropriate campus safety and security entries in the Risk Register.
  • Provide guidance to the Capital Projects team in ensuring correct specifications for fire protection and security systems during new and renovation construction projects.
  • Records and compiles security incident statistics and maintains the Laboratory-wide report system. Provides daily incident reports to the President, Chief Operating Officer, and VP/Chief Facilities Officer as requested.
  • Provides information and/or testimony relevant to incidents (accidents, trip/falls, injuries, etc.) arising at the Laboratory.
  • Provides additional departmental support as directed by the VP/Chief Facilities Officer.
  • Ensure adherence to all Laboratory policies and procedures.

Position Requirements

EDUCATION: Bachelor’s degree in a related area is required. A Master’s Degree in organizational leadership, business management, or a public safety-related field of study is preferred.
EXPERIENCE: Fifteen years’ experience managing security or law enforcement-related functions. Prior security experience in higher education is preferred.
SKILLS: Requires frontline management/leadership skills, team leadership skills, time management skills, effective communications skills, and strong computer skills. Also requires excellent interpersonal skills and the ability to exercise judgment and discretion in sensitive situations. Ability to be proactive, collaborative, and adaptive.
