The beginnings of
Georgetown University Press
can be traced to 1964—and we currently publish approximately forty new titles per year, as well as two journals, with an active list of more than 1,000 titles across the fields of languages & linguistics, international affairs, religion & theology, political science, regional studies, and global business and the global economy. These publications primarily service the scholarly community, and many also reach the general reading public. Many help to unite people speaking different languages, literally and figuratively, and all attempt to illuminate, clarify, and respond to the world's most difficult questions.
Job Overview
The Editorial and Production Coordinator supports and ensures timely and accurate book production (editing, proofreading, indexing, design, vendor selection, distribution, and quality control) of approximately 45 new book titles, 1 journal, and more than 25 book reprints per year. They primarily manage the reprint program and process, the Library of Congress cataloguing submission process, and the production and quality control of book projects.
Work Interactions
The Editorial, Design, and Production Department works in conjunction with all other Press departments to publish scholarly books and journals for a diverse, worldwide readership, which in turn supports the academic mission of the university.
Reporting to the Senior Production Editor, the Editorial and Production Coordinator communicates regularly with authors and manages assignments with freelance copyeditors, proofreaders, and indexers; and assists with the supervision of two student interns.
They work with a variety of individuals from diverse backgrounds in a respectful and open way; and contributes to the university’s interest in promoting serious and sustained discourse among people of different faiths, cultures, and beliefs to promote understanding.
Qualifications
- Associate’s degree
- 2 years of experience in publishing, with a thorough knowledge of editorial style standards (Chicago Manual of Style), electronic publishing processes, and computer applications as needed)
- Fluency with computers (Mac and PC), database programs, as well as programs supporting electronic publishing and file preparation (Adobe creative products, word processing, etc.) – preference for knowledge of HTML, XML, and/or file conversion practices
- Editorial skills, to include a thorough knowledge of standard editorial practices, mastery of English language (grammar, usage, and spelling), and superior attention to detail
- Strong interpersonal skills, ability to shift focus quickly and juggle multiple priorities, and ease with Internet searching and online resources.
