Engineer Sr – Certification

This position is responsible for the creation and operational oversight of the US and Canada certification schedule, early model year planning and weekly status updates including risks related to Certification timing. This position leads and trains Engineers in the timely preparation and submission of vehicle emission certification documents (including applications, running changes and field fixes) to the appropriate government agencies. This role also coordinates the annual Certification Preview Meetings with the Government Agencies.
Emissions Certification Planning and Execution – (80%)
- Coordinates, prepares and aligns Certification Preview Meeting materials in compliance with government agencies regulations and guidance documents including
o preparing the initial lists of vehicles, test groups, evaporative families, projected sales, emissions standards, projected certification timing and related information prior to each model year
o identifying new and carryover carlines, test groups, engine concepts, emission standards, and emission related vehicle technologies, planned emissions and fuel economy tests
o Aligning compliance scenarios with VWGoA and VW AG strategy teams
- Manages the certification schedule for all vehicles by model year and test group, including all milestones for the US certification and testing, fuel economy labeling and OBD approvals, including escalation as needed
- Leads and trains the team in the preparation and review of emission certification applications (initial, update and final) including submission to appropriate federal and state government agencies
- Plans and aligns needed certification and fuel economy tests with the Certification Testing Team in Oxnard, CA
- Leads the scheduling, preparation and supports testing of emission certification data test vehicles at US EPA (Agency Confirmatory testing)
- Ensures the on-time verification and submission of the running change/ field fix notifications
Communication and Special Projects – (20%)
- Leads the response to technical and certification / regulatory related inquiries from government agencies.
- Key contact for brand technical conformity teams and other internal stakeholders on status of certification application
- Responds to certification, vehicle specifications and emission data related inquiries from various organizations
- Leads weekly Certification meetings with brand technical conformity teams
Qualifications:
Years of Experience:
- 7+ Years of Related Experience
Education:
- Bachelor’s Degree (preferably Engineering, Information Systems, Automotive Technology, or related field or equivalent) - required
- Master’s Degree (preferable Engineering, Business, Automotive Technology, or IT Project Management) - desired

- Understanding of the Volkswagen Group product line, including vehicle types, body styles, model numbers, engine types
- Understanding of emission regulations and emission certification procedures
- Working knowledge of vehicle emissions and component testing and associated laboratory procedures.
- Working knowledge of vehicle emission control systems and onboard diagnostics
- Expertise with standard business software (e.g., Excel, PowerPoint)
- Basic knowledge and ability to learn the function of computer databases (e.g., Access)
Specialized Skills - Desired:
- Direct experience with emission certification, emission testing and related regulations
- Ability to document work product and processes affecting EEO
Work Flexibility:
- Domestic and international travel required – up to 25% (2-7 day duration)
- Work schedule can be somewhat flexible (e.g., flextime, or compressed work week)
- Must be available to contact colleagues at European locations and government agencies across the U.S. and Canada
