Position Information


TxDOT's North Harris Area Office is looking for a Transportation Engineer III or IV based in Humble, TX. As a Transportation Engineer, you will be part of our Design team working on projects that will improve the TxDOT roadways you and your family drive on everyday. This position requires a strong design background with good oral and written communication skills between internal personnel and external entities/individuals. This position also requires good organizational and time management skills, and being a team player when it comes to getting the job done. Transportation Engineer III: (B25) $5,258.66

Transportation Engineer IV: (B26) $5,784.58

Maximum Monthly Salary

Position Description


Performs advanced and complex transportation engineering work in one or more functional areas such as planning, project development and design, construction, transportation/traffic operations and maintenance. Ensures compliance with applicable federal and state laws, policies, procedures, standards and guidelines. Work requires contact with governmental officials and private entities. Employees at this level establish their own work plan and priorities to meet set objectives. Issues are rarely referred to the supervisor but are handled at the occurrence.

Essential Duties:

Transportation Engineer III

  • Performs advanced and complex engineering design work such as development of layouts, sketches, plans, specifications,
    estimates and contracts.
  • Performs advanced and complex planning work such as plan review, calculations and transportation planning studies
  • Performs data collection, evaluations, analyses, studies, inspections, forecasts, assessments, and plan development.
  • Analyzes and assists in the resolution of contract problems and disputes.
  • Assists in the development, preparation and letting of maintenance contracts for the district.
  • Assists with design, computer operations and plan preparation.
  • Drives/travels to project/work locations to make on-site engineering reviews, analyses, tests and to provide technical
    support.
  • Reviews and revises schematics, PS&E, project designs, shop drawings and field changes for traffic control devices,
    signals, signs, markings, detours, traffic control plans, electrical distribution and roadway lighting and traffic management systems.
  • Reviews shop drawings, plans, specifications, estimates, supplemental agreements and change order requests.
  • Performs other job responsibilities as assigned.

Transportation Engineer IV

The following are in addition to those duties listed above:

  • Develops short-term and long-term goals and coordinates planning activities and resources required to meet goals.
  • Maintains a critical bridge list and coordinates with the Bridge Division, area engineers and other district staff on
    critical findings involving state maintained bridges to have them posted, repaired and closed to the traveling public.
  • Performs, reviews and monitors detailed investigations, data collection, analyses and coordination of bridge related
    research and recommends cost effective project level design for new, rehabilitated and reconstructed bridges.
  • Recommends prioritization of bridge replacement, bridge rehabilitation and repair of damaged bridges.
  • Coordinates maintenance matters with Area Engineers.
  • Coordinates phases of preliminary design and revisions in PS&E with districts, divisions, Administration, the FHWA,
    contractors, fabricators, Corps of Engineers and local entities.
  • Makes presentations and represents TxDOT.
  • Oversees construction project traffic control plans; periodically reviews traffic control devices with Area Engineers.
  • Performs other job responsibilities as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications:

Education: Bachelor's Degree in engineering or related science bachelor's or higher degree accepted by TX PELS.

Experience

Transportation Engineer III: 6 years engineering, transportation engineering, or related engineering experience (Experience can be satisfied by fulltime or prorated part-time equivalent).

Transportation Engineer IV: 7 years engineering, transportation engineering, or related engineering experience (Experience can be satisfied by fulltime or prorated part-time equivalent).

  • Related graduate level education may be substituted for experience on a year per year basis. Substitutions for Minimum Qualifications

Licenses and Certifications:

  • TX Licensed Prof Engineer**

**Professional engineers licensed in another state in the United States, but not currently licensed in the State of Texas, must (1) meet the license requirements of the State of Texas Engineering Practices Act, (2) obtain a professional engineering license from the State of Texas within six (6) months of the date of hire, and (3) sign an agreement to that effect as a condition of employment.**

  • Standards and specifications for bridges and other transportation structures
  • Applicable plans, specifications and estimates preparation, review, processing and compliance requirements
  • Maintenance concepts, methods, policies and requirements
  • Applicable industry safety standards, guidelines and specification codes

Transportation Engineer IV

Knowledgeable in:

  • Construction engineering policies and procedures
  • Construction phasing and sequencing
  • Pavement maintenance
  • Planning, coordinating and handling multiple projects within area of responsibility to meet short and long term deadlines
  • Monitoring the status and progress of projects
  • Leading, assigning, reviewing, and monitoring the work of others
  • Exercises logic and reasoning to define problems, establish facts and draw valid conclusions; makes decisions that support business objectives and goals

Physical Requirements and Working Conditions:

  • Sedentary work: Lift up to 10lbs at a time and occasionally carry files/small tools
  • Light work: Lift up to 20lbs at a time and frequently lift or carry objects up to 10lbs
  • Balancing-walking, standing, crouching on various surfaces without falling
  • Stooping-bending body downward and forward by bending spine at waist
  • Kneeling-bending legs at knee to come to a rest on knee(s)
  • Reaching-extending hand(s) and arm(s) in any direction
  • Crouching-bending body downward and forward by bending leg(s) and spine
  • Walking-moving on foot to accomplish tasks: long distance/from one work site to another
  • Lifting-raising objects from lower to higher position/horizontally to a different position
