Altered Tails Executive Director

Altered Tails Barnhart Clinic is a non-profit 501(c)(3) organization that provides high quality high volume spay/neuter services. Altered Tails began as a small mobile clinic performing spay/neuter surgeries out of a garage in 2003. Since then, the organization has been scaling to meet the customer demand for affordable spay/neuter services across our communities. Altered Tails is currently the largest non-profit spay/neuter organization in Arizona. ​​Operating out of our two brick and mortar locations, we leverage our experience and robust operating budget to fix more than 27,000 cats and dogs annually. And we are just getting started.

Our Mission: Provide accessible and high quality spay/neuter services for companion animals, as well as free-roaming cats, which dramatically reduces the use of euthanasia as a means of animal population control.

Our Goal: To expand our success throughout Maricopa county and Arizona.

Leadership

  • Ability to develop and execute short and long term strategic plans with a vision that advances Altered Tails’ mission and goals.
  • Responsible for recruitment, employment and release of personnel. Altered Tails currently has more than 30 employees, including 4 full‐time veterinarians and 2 clinic managers.
  • Procuring/Facilitation educational opportunities for staff and volunteers.
  • Establish and maintain effective working relationships with Board members, staff, volunteers and others in the animal welfare community. Currently, Altered Tails is a member within multiple coalitions/community groups.
  • Willingness to learn about all core functions of the organization and work with the Medical Director and Clinic Managers to develop best practices and standards.

Fundraising and Grants

  • Procure funding to ensure that Altered Tails meets its annual objectives and continues to see sustainable future growth.
  • Develop and maintain a growing and diverse funding base including individual donors, corporations and foundations through events, grant writing, newsletters, direct solicitation and special campaigns.
  • Responsible for submitting grant applications and ensuring compliance with their terms.
  • Responsible for grant management. Including, but not limited to working with chief vet and clinic managers to schedule and ensure surgeries will be complete by the end of the term, communication with grantor and timely submission of reports.
  • Grant writing experience is a plus.

Finance

  • Develop and maintain the organization’s budget, cash flow, operating plans and provide corrective action as needed.
  • Provide oversight for various accounting functions including payroll, payables and accounts receivables.
  • Report to the Board quarterly or as needed to review fiscal and operational stability of the organization.

Communication

  • Ability to communicate effectively (written and verbal) with individuals, corporations, foundations, the media, community groups as well as staff and volunteers.
  • Maintain a working knowledge of significant developments and needs in the animal welfare community.

Preferred Experience

  • At least 3 years experience in a senior management role in a non-profit organization.
  • Experience working with a Board of Directors.
  • Knowledge of and commitment to accepted animal welfare standards.
  • Proficiency in basic computer applications and software (i.e. Microsoft Office, Excel, Google Docs, etc.) and the ability to learn simple web-based applications and software to manage shelter data and perform record keeping functions.
  • Experience in animal (dog/cat) veterinary clinic setting.
  • Bachelor’s or graduate degree is a plus, but not required depending on experience and fit

Salary

Starting $100,000, DOE

Hours: FLSA Status: Exempt Position

Altered Tails’ business hours are Tuesday - Friday, and one Saturday a month, from 7:30am – 5:00pm. Daily hours may vary according to the needs of the organization.
