The County of Sonoma Human Services Department (HSD) is seeking experienced Social Workers ready to make a difference in the lives of our community!
Starting salary up to $
38.13
/hour ($
79,581.89
/year), plus a cash allowance of $600/month, and a competitive total compensation package!
This recruitment is currently being conducted to fill two Social Service Worker III (SSW III) vacancies with the Family, Youth, and Children Division, one with the Adoption Assistance Program and one with the Emergency Response Program. Adoption Assistance Program
The Social Service Worker III position within the Adoption Assistance Program is responsible for providing post adoption services for families and children in Sonoma County. They will manage the adoption assistance caseload, complete ongoing Adoption Assistance Program annual renewal paperwork, and review and approve Adoption Assistance Program extensions for youth ages 18-21. Additional duties include:
- Engaging families by providing them with referrals for post adoption services, Sonoma County Behavioral Health, or other needed services
- Providing case management services to non-related legal guardians
- Completing foster care payment renewal paperwork every six months
- Conducting in-person home visits to ensure the child is safe and that their needs are met
- Implementing Guardianship Assessments for families referred by the Probate Court
- Providing support and resources for families when emergencies or urgent issues arise
- Entering all required information into the CSW/CMS (child welfare database)
The Social Service Worker III position within the Emergency Response Program is responsible for working with children and families, completing the Emergency Relative Placement process including talking to family members about their family history and carrying out home inspections and safety checks, and completing all the initial placement paperwork for children that are victims of abuse or neglect and are to be placed with their relatives or members of their extended family. Additional duties include:
- Accompanying children to hospitals or medical providers to ensure that a medical clearance has been completed
- Transporting children to appointments, visits, or to their relative placement
- Working closely with the Kinship Center to ensure that the relatives are connected with the proper resources to support them in looking after a child
- Facilitating initial contact between the child and their parents and between the caregivers and the parents
- Working collaboratively with Emergency Response to make sure that referrals are completed, and the parents are engaged in prevention services
- Engaging families by providing them with support and information about service referrals and providing warm hand-offs so that they are more likely to follow through with services
- Working with the CPS social worker to provide some case management services to families to help prevent further involvement in the child welfare system
- Entering all the required information into CWS/CMS (The child welfare database)
- A bachelor’s degree in social work or a related field
- The ability to engage with children and families in stressful situations
- Excellent communication, multitasking, and problem-solving skills
- Community care coordination, mental health, and counseling experience
- The ability to keep calm in a stressful work environment
- Knowledge of trauma informed care approaches
- Ability to engage with children and families in a non-judgmental way using cultural humility
- Experience working with at risk children and/or families that have housing and economic challenges
- Bilingual (English/Spanish) speaking abilities are highly desirable

Minimum Qualifications
Education and Experience: Any combination of training and experience which would provide the opportunity to acquire the knowledge and abilities listed. Normally, graduation from college, with a degree in social work, sociology, psychology or other behavioral science; and two years experience at the level of Social Service worker II.
OR
Academic course work at a college or university in social work, psychology, sociology, and other behavior science; and four years of progressively responsible experience in a social work agency at least two of which were at the level of Social Service Worker II would provide such opportunity.
License: Possession of a valid driver's license at the appropriate level including special endorsements, as required by the State of California, may be required depending upon assignment to perform the essential job functions of the position.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
Considerable knowledge of: the basic principles and theories of sociology and psychology including abnormal psychology, human growth and development, group and family dynamics; principles and techniques of interviewing and recording social case work; principles of individual and group behavior; provisions of federal, state, and local welfare programs and the laws, rules and regulations governing their applications; community organizations and resources; socioeconomic conditions and trends; current problems and methodology in public social service.
Working knowledge of: supervisory techniques and practices.
Ability to: assess and evaluate data and develop an effective course of action; apply laws, rules, and regulations to welfare department operation; interpret social service programs to applicants, recipients, and the public; make effective use of resources and services in the community; develop and maintain effective working relationships with clients, departmental staff, public and private Social Service agencies, community based organizations and the public; accept and use consultative supervision and act effectively under stressful situations; control personal bias and apply social work ethics; input data, reports and narratives into a computer system; keep detailed records and prepare reports and correspondence.
