Position Summary: The Fuels Crew Worker implements wildland fuels management projects for forest health, wildland fire safety, cultural burns, and prescribed burn preparations. The Crew Worker will work towards training to serve on a Wildland Fire Module Type II crew. While this objective will take several seasons, the first season will focus on training and obtaining wildland fire qualifications while helping to implement land management projects and practices under the direct supervision of the Fuels Crew Supervisor. The nature of this work requires considerable physical activity and the ability to follow directions.
Tasks:
- Reduce accumulated downed wood to decrease the likelihood of a stand-replacing fire.
- Restore and improving wildlife habitat.
- Use of hand tools such as chainsaws and brush cutters, and motorized wheelbarrows to reduce slash and prepare prescribe burn units, felling and clearing hazardous trees, and assisting with fire suppression (training provided, no previous experience required).
- Camp up to seven nights in a wilderness setting.
- Communicating effectively with crew members, crew leaders, and staff.
- Contribute to primary duties at the campsite, including keeping the camp area clean and organizing crew equipment.
- Follow clear directions.
- Working safely with others.
- Show respect when interacting with other members, leaders, staff, and community members.
- Fully and actively participating in paid training and in-field education sessions.
- Percentage of time spent on: labor– 60%, training– 10%, traveling– 10%, hiking– 10%
- Performs other duties as assigned
Qualifications:
- Current NWCG S-130/190 Wildland Fire Training.
- Possession of a valid California class C driver’s license.
Experience and Education
- Six months of arduous outdoor work experience.
SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:
- Must be physically capable of walking and working in areas of uneven, rocky terrain for extended periods of time, in seasonal temperatures that may be below 32º F or exceed 90º F.
- Must be able to bend over, lift, or throw repeatedly
- Must be able to lift 65 lbs continuously.
- Possess the willingness and ability to work and camp up to seven nights in a row, in a wilderness setting, in all weather conditions.
- Be at least 18 years of age.
- Must be able to communicate and possess excellent interpersonal skills with associates.
- A physical examination is required every year. In addition, when appropriate, a fitness for duty exam may be required.
- Ability to pass wildland fire physical fitness qualification test (pack test – arduous – or program equivalent), which requires walking with a 45-pound backpack for a distance of 3 miles.
- May be required to work beyond normal work hours, including nights, weekends, and holidays.
- Maintain physical ability and stamina to meet position tasks and responsibilities, which include as a minimum: vision good enough to drive vehicles, specifications, fine print, and visual display terminals; hearing well enough to identify mechanical noises, converse on the radio, telephone and in person over incident noise; bodily mobility in limited access areas, maintain balance on narrow platforms.
