Groups and Discipleship Director Job at City Church of Knoxville
Director of Groups & Discipleship
Our Director of Groups & Discipleship will oversee our system of LifeGroups and
LifeGroup leaders. They will help our elder team in creating an environment of discipleship in our groups, including the identification, training, equipping, and care of
LifeGroup leaders.
Character Qualifications
A leader in this position must meet the character qualifications of a deacon, found in 1
Timothy 3:8-13:
- Above Reproach, Dignified and Blameless (1 Tim 3:8,10): As a leader at City
Church you must have a reputation of conducting yourself in a dignified way. It is important to note that “dignified” serves as a summary to all the other qualifications. This quality is a validation of maturity and victory in the other qualities. You must have a good reputation within the body in order to lead it. You must also have a good reputation with those outside the body of Christ.
- Not Double-Tongued or Easily Given to Gossip (1 Tim 3:8): As a leader at City
Church, you will often find yourself encountering confidential or sensitive information. You will be expected to share that information only with those for whom it is absolutely necessary. When conflict occurs, you will be expected to address that conflict with the person(s) involved before discussing it with uninvolved parties.
- Holding the Deep Truths of the Faith with a Clear Conscience (1 Tim 3:9): As a leader at City Church, one must be confident about the core, undeniable truths of the Christian faith. Even (and especially) the culturally controversial ones.
- Not Addicted to Much Wine, Temperate (1 Tim 3:8): As a leader at City Church you must show restraint and moderation. You are called by God to lead the church and therefore must be controlled (as much as possible) by the Holy Spirit. When leaders lack the ability to avoid addictions or detrimental habits they prove themselves to be lovers and servants of something other than God.
- Not greedy for dishonest gain (1 Tim 3:8): As a leader of God’s church you are called to be someone who does not love money. You must not feel entitled to any standard of living, income, property, or leisure. City Church employees do not consider their job to be a stepping stone to a bigger, better-paying opportunity, but
rather a responsibility to a particular people. You must be someone whose generosity outshines your standard of living.
- Husband of One Wife (or Wife of One Husband) (1 Tim 3:12): A leader must be distinctly marked by sexual faithfulness to his or her spouse (if married) and to celibacy (if single). This is an ongoing battle for everyone. However, a pattern of repentance, transparency and health in one’s sexual ethics must be in place to lead in God’s church.
- Managing One’s Household Well (1 Tim 3:12): One must have their own households and affairs in order to adequately lead in the Church. This is one of the more challenging qualifications to prescribe specific behaviors, but it is obvious to most when those behaviors are absent. You must lead your own life (and family, if applicable) in a way that models the redeemed community God desires from his
Church.
Additionally, our Groups & Discipleship Director is expected to be (or be able to be) a member in good standing of City Church, and embody a teachable spirit (see Proverbs
9:9).
