Job Summary

Homecare Specialists are assigned to deliver a range of services from personal/supportive care (ex: bathing, feeding, grooming, medication reminders, etc.) to household support services (ex: meal preparation, light housekeeping, running errands, etc.) which support the client’s ability to remain in their home. Every facet of this position is carried out with person centered care and impeccable customer service.

Major Responsibilities

The Homecare Specialist Will:
  • Executes client’s established care plan and communicates changes to Client Care Manager as necessary (this may be via phone or during in-home nurse visits as asked.)
  • Assists the client to maintain personal hygiene and grooming
  • Demonstrates knowledge of personalized care skills-bathing/showering, brushing/combing hair, skin/nail care, etc.
  • Assist in maintaining a safe environment
  • Understands the use of transfer techniques
  • Assist client with ambulation as necessary (Knowledge of walker, cane, wheelchair, adaptive equipment, etc.)
  • Encourage as much independence as possible in accordance with the care plan and maintains an objective caregiver role at all times.
  • Follows universal precautions (ex: handwashing, gloves, etc.) at all times per Heritage guidelines. Demonstrates knowledge of infection control and cross contamination practices.
  • Assists client with medications as designated by the Client Care Manager
  • Reports anything out of the ordinary right away (ex: possible reactions, missing or extra medications, etc.)
Homemaker services can involve light housekeeping, meal preparation, errands or incidental transportation. This includes:

  • Performing light housekeeping tasks (dusting, vacuuming, making beds, changing linens, cleaning bathrooms, kitchens, etc.)
  • Washing and ironing laundry
  • Running errands
  • Planning and preparing meals
  • Accompanying clients to appointments
  • Other reasonable tasks as assigned
Additional responsibilities include:
  • Contributing to a positive living environment to enhance a client’s quality of life
  • Turning in paperwork (timesheets, client activity sheets, etc.) timely and according to office policy
  • Reporting any significant changes in a client’s needs or living conditions right away
  • Regularly communicating with supervisor and office staff
  • Performing other reasonable duties as assigned
Essential qualifications

  • Must be a minimum of 18 years of age
  • Holds the minimum education, experience, and skills to perform responsibilities
  • Must have and continue a clean criminal background report
  • Must have and continue a clean drug test
  • Must have and continue a clean driving record showing 3 pts or less
  • Understand, speak, read and write English clearly
  • Ability to lift, push or pull 50 pounds
  • Ability to bend, twist, stoop, kneel, and reach
  • Ability to walk independently up and down a normal flight of 13-15 stairs
  • Ability to withstand exposure to dust, mildew, and cleaning solutions
  • Ability to treat and care for clients and their property with dignity and respect
  • Ability to adapt to various living environments and locations
  • Ability to communicate with clients in a friendly manner always putting customer service first
  • Proven knowledge of exceptional cleanliness standards
  • Proven knowledge of elevated meal planning and preparation
  • Proven history of excellent customer service
  • Previous Homecare or related experience is required
Required Certifications, Licenses, and Registrations

  • This position may require you to run errands and provide incidental transportation for a client using your vehicle or a client’s vehicle.
  • You must have your own vehicle and provide a valid driver’s license and current auto insurance. 85% or higher on the Skills Test given during orientation.
  • Must complete all in-services timely (ex. Annual Skills Fair, Relias Videos, Caregiver News, etc.) Must complete the Heritage provided Culinary, Environmental Services and Hospitality trainings.
Dress Code Requirements

Acceptable clothing:
  • Shirts with a finished collar or hemline and sleeves. Khaki pants, slacks, and trousers. Scrubs are appropriate. Shirts may not be ripped, revealing, halter style, have an inappropriate message or be sleeveless without a cover-up. Homecare staff may wear khaki shorts of the appropriate length and fit during the summer months. Khaki pants or slacks and a polo within approved color scheme will be required, effective April 1, 2019.
  • Closed toe shoes only due to safety concerns. Casual dress shoes or tennis shoes are appropriate.
  • Hair longer than shoulder length must be worn up (off the shoulder.) Nails must be clean and trimmed. Nail polish should be well kept or removed before your shift.
  • No personal hats or caps shall be worn by staff while working a shift on the main campus or in a private client’s house.
  • Attire required for religious purposes or to honor cultural tradition is allowed.
  • Name tags must be always worn and visible.
Potential Schedules

  • The Homecare Companion position provides opportunities for a variety of shifts, including overnight.
