JOB SUMMARY

HIRING RANGE: $16.06 - $18.89 hourly
FULL RANGE: $16.06 - $21.73 hourly

Under the direction and supervision of the Library Director, the Library Assistant provides exceptional customer service to library patrons, assists in reference and circulation areas, and performs various other library information services

EXAMPLES OF DUTIES

  • Provides service to library users in a courteous and professional manner.
  • Assists, supports, and participates in the planning, promotion, development, and implementation of various programs and activities for the library; creates engaging classes and works to encourage patron participation.
  • Performs routine circulation duties including check-in, check-out, shelving, holds, and fees; processes library materials and maintains the organization and general aesthetics of the library.
  • Processes borrower card applications and maintain confidentiality of records; collects payment for memberships, printing, and lost or damaged materials.
  • Inform library users of library policies, services, and programs.
  • Process interlibrary loan requests from patrons, and handle receipt and return of loaned materials; assists Director with development of collection and general research.
  • Process new materials and supplies; verify cataloging and shipping records and process donations for collection and book sale.
  • Assist library users with resources, including online catalog and public computer workstations.
  • Train and provide direction to library volunteers as instructed by the Library Director.
  • Process withdrawn materials and prepare for storage or other disposition as directed; repairs damaged books, kits, and library materials.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS
Experience and Education Guidelines:

Experience:

  • Applicable work experience preferred.
  • High School Diploma or GED.
  • Associate’s degree preferred.

License or Certification:

  • A valid Texas Driver’s License.

Knowledge of:

  • Library programs and services
  • Library information, shelving procedures, repairing books and materials
  • Computer skills and related systems
  • Child development and program creation
  • Town and Library policies and procedures
  • Applicable local, state, and national laws that affect libraries
  • Customer service standards of excellence

Ability to:

  • Demonstrate integrity, ingenuity, and inventiveness in the performance of assigned tasks
  • Learn public library operations, policies, and procedures
  • Use computerized databases and related software
  • Perform shelving and shelf-reading duties; effectively operate cataloging and library systems
  • Keep confidential records
  • Deal tactfully and courteously with the all age groups of the public, library staff and volunteers
  • Work well as part of a team, generating, and sharing in the enthusiasm for the valuable role of the Library in the community
  • Use various office equipment, including but not limited to, personal computer, copier, calculator, fax machine, audiovisual equipment, mobile and desk phones, and department vehicles

The primary duties of the position are performed in a general office environment at the Prosper Community Library.

  • The library work environment may be busy and demanding with possible exposure to hostile or angry citizens and business owners.
  • While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to sit, stand, climb, stoop, kneel, crouch, talk, hear, use hands to finger/handle, feel, reach with hands, and maneuver heavy book carts
  • The employee is occasionally required to crawl and balance.
  • The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 25 pounds.
  • Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, and the ability to adjust focus.
  • Must be able to work nights and weekends.
