About us
We are searching for talented individuals who are driven to tackle the most ambitious goal of our time - building the computer hardware that enables the development of safe artificial general intelligence. See more at fathomradiant.co/aboutus
In our people, we above all value kindness, a scout mindset, a focus on improvement, and prioritising to get the right things done. We aim to help build one of the most transformative technologies in the world, with massive social and ethical implications. We think this makes representation even more important, and we are actively striving to have a range of diverse perspectives on our team.
This role
We are seeking an experienced professional with broad interest and strong technical background in the field of micro-optics, from optical design through micro-optics assembly and manufacturing. The successful candidate will be responsible for the design and development of multi-layer micro-optics components and systems, and helping develop test methods and procedures to characterize optical system performance.
Areas of contribution
- Work closely with Fathom Radiant's various technical teams to enable unique and novel optoelectronic-electronic integrated systems
- Take a lead role in developing optical system designs, defining design philosophy and directing and performing system analyses
- Conceive, design and simulate the performance of functional 3D micro-optical structures such as multi-element lenslet arrays and lenses
- Identify specific plans to accomplish the project on time, utilizing optical design/analysis software and working with manufacturing partners
- Evaluate micro-optic vendor capabilities and constraints to design micro-optic components for automated assembly
- Work with micro-optic vendors to deliver pre-production prototypes and optical stack assembly techniques
- Develop optical test and characterization procedures
- Work with opto-mechanical engineers to define mechanical tolerances and constraints at the system level
Requirements (necessary skills for this role):
- B.S., MS, or PhD in physics, optics or electrical engineering, or equivalent knowledge.
- Experience in design, fabrication, and testing of lenslet arrays and precision molded optics
- Strong communication skills, ideally combined with experience working with vendors/suppliers
- Some travel (<10%) may be required
Nice-to-haves (we will prioritize candidates that also have these skills):
- Experience with lens design, tolerance analysis, detailed drawing preparation, and system performance modeling in support of program deliverables ranging from prototype hardware to first article production units
- Experience leading and managing engineering projects
- Familiarity with fabrication processes for wafer scale optics and 3D or stacked micro-optics components
- Working knowledge of optical assembly & testing techniques including MTF testing, interferometry, alignment telescopes and optical inspection devices
- Experience with non-sequential ray trace methods and stray light analysis
- Experience in managing of technology development projects, ideally in an industry environment
You'll do well here if...
- You're motivated to build something that hasn’t been built before
- You're kind, enjoy thoughtful discussions fueled by problem-solving and logic, and care about our mission to positively influence the trajectory of artificial intelligence
- You find large challenges exciting and enjoy discovering and defining problems as much as solving them
- You deliver. You may enjoy thoughtful conversations about problems and perfecting designs, but in the end, you know that what matters is delivering a manufacturable solution that works every time
- You are a cross-disciplinary team member. You are excited to work with and learn from software, mechanical, electrical, and optics engineers. You are comfortable communicating across teams
Indicative salary range for this role: $90,000 - $150,000
For all roles, we target market salaries, with an additional benefits package. Our comprehensive benefits include startup equity, medical expenses coverage (including extra coverage for employees with a family).
