This permanent position is with the Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife (ODFW) located in La Grande.
Are you passionate about doing what's best for fish and their habitat? Make a difference in Oregon's fisheries by directing, coordinating and implementing fish management activities in the Grande Ronde Watershed District.
What you will do:
  • Plan, direct and coordinate management of specific aspects of fish resources. Oversee employees in the day-to-day field activities of gathering data pertaining to specific aspects of fish resources. Responsible for collecting and summarizing data on harvest, spawning, escapement and distribution of various fish species within the district. Identify and develop habitat improvements and public access projects.
  • Act as agency liaison and spokesperson to the public, media, organizations, special interest groups and other agencies. Provide information to civic groups, recreational organizations, governmental groups and the public in general regarding the Agency's fish and wildlife programs, activities and related topics. Participate on local and regional planning efforts that have a nexus to water, fish habitat, and fish populations. Protect aquatic and riparian habitat within the district by frequent field investigations of land use operations and recommending to various regulating agencies and private landowners how they might minimize, mitigate or eliminate damage to the fish resource. Provide expertise and technical assistance to landowners and public. Respond to public inquiries, provides guidance that assists public on how to best utilize fishery resources. Prepare and conduct information and education program in local area. Respond to complaints and concerns from public or other agencies.
  • Compile preliminary reports and final reports on all activities within the district. Make presentations on findings to staff, peers, commission and public.

Working Conditions
  • Frequent travel by boat, foot, vehicle or horseback through isolated and rugged terrain.
  • Exposure to inclement weather and road conditions.
  • Requires physical ability to perform instant or arduous physical activity.
  • Requires a flexible work schedule that varies in the number of hours worked on a daily basis, but not necessarily each day, or a work schedule in which the starting and stopping times vary on a daily basis, but not necessarily each day. This includes working at all hours and workdays in excess of eight hours.
  • This position requires a Boater Education Card obtained through the Oregon State Marine Board. There are some exceptions to this (e.g., Coast Guard Boat Operator License or commercial fishing license). For further information, access the Web site at

  • This position requires Hazardous Waste Operations Emergency Response (HAZWOPER) training certification to respond to hazardous material spill events. Criminal Records/DMV Check
Applicants are subject to both a criminal history and motor vehicles check. Driving is required for all positions. Out-of-state finalists will be required to present a current certified or uncertified driving record for review to be considered for the position. Be prepared to obtain as soon as possible. You are expected to provide the out-of-state driving record before an offer can be made unless extenuating circumstances exist. We are seeking applicants who meet the minimum qualifications and have the following skills and experience:
Minimum Qualifications:
  • Three years of biological experience performing studies, research, or resource management activities in a fish or wildlife program. At least one year of the experience must be at a technical or professional level performing activities in a fish or wildlife program such as researching and analyzing data, conducting investigations, applying pertinent laws and regulations, or coordinating and monitoring project activities; AND
  • A Bachelor's degree in Fisheries or Wildlife Science or a closely-related Bachelor's degree with at least 45 quarter (30 semester) hours of biological/ecological coursework, or three additional years of biological experience performing studies, research, or resource management activities in a fisheries or wildlife program.
Applicants who have obtained a Master's degree or Doctorate that included work experience from an internship, work/study, thesis, or similar program may list this experience in their application to receive credit for the work experience. The Master's degree/Doctorate and applicable work experience will be considered separately and both the education and applicable experience may count toward minimum qualifications.
Requested Skills:
  • Experience in managing fisheries and fish resources for a state, federal or tribal agency
  • Experience managing anadromous fish populations and associated fisheries
  • Knowledge or experience managing reservoir and pond fisheries for warmwater game fish species
  • Experience developing regulations governing recreational fisheries for salmonids
  • Experience developing project funding proposals
  • Knowledge of salmonid life history patterns and habitat needs
  • Experience using software to summarize, analyze and present biological data
  • Experience developing budgets and tracking cost expenditures
  • Designing and implementing fish population sampling and monitoring projects
  • Working with government agencies, tribes, and/or private landowners on fish habitat improvement projects
