Quantitative Analyst Job at Extreme Event Solutions
We help the world see new possibilities and inspire change for better tomorrows. Our analytic solutions bridge content, data, and analytics to help business, people, and society become stronger, more resilient, and sustainable.
About the Role
As the quantitative analyst in the Arium group, part of the Verisk Extreme Event Solutions division, you will support the research and development of the insurance industry’s leading liability catastrophe modeling solution for the global insurance and reinsurance market. The Arium models quantify the systemic and emerging liability risks that can lead to significant aggregations and clash risks across portfolios, ranging from climate change to recessions to chemical exposures and across major commercial liability lines. You will not need to be an expert in any of these risks or lines, but you should have experience in econometric and statistical methods and be a critical and creative thinker with a strong drive to grapple with complex topics. Your skillset and expertise will have a direct impact on researching and quantifying large-loss liability events and model development to support this fast-growth space in the liability industry. This role is part of the Arium research and modeling team and will be based either in Jersey City or Boston, USA.
About the Day to Day Responsibilities of the Role
- Reporting into the actuarial function and working closely with the data science and research teams, you will leverage econometric and statistical methods to support the development of models and frameworks to quantify large-loss liability events
- Support the research and building of modeling frameworks for new emerging large-loss risks facing the liability insurance industry, and communicating findings to internal and external stakeholders
- Embed qualitative and legal research and expertise into models to support the development of a stochastic liability catastrophe event catalogue.
- Assist in ad hoc data querying and analytical tasks.
About You and How You Can Excel in This Role
- Bachelor’s degree in economics, finance, or other similar quantitative field with 2-3 years of professional experience, or a Master’s degree with corresponding professional experience
- Strong background in econometrics and statistical principles and applications required, including time series forecasting, fitting distributions to data, and cross-sectional/panel econometric methods. Some background in property/casualty actuarial science or familiarity with actuarial science and p/c insurance principles would be a plus.
- Experience in economic/financial forecasting and model parameterization, preferably in a commercial context and under modeling and data uncertainty. Public policy-related experience would be a plus.
- Stochastic modeling experience would be a plus but not required
- Demonstrated ability to work independently on projects and tasks independently and under tight deadlines.
- Required programming skills: Python, R, SQL, and a familiarity with GitHub and Bitbucket.
- Demonstrated effective communication, collaboration, organizational and critical thinking skills
