Morgan Advanced Materials, a world leader in advanced materials development and production, has established a cutting‐edge Carbon Science Centre of Excellence at the Innovation Park at Pennsylvania State University, University Park campus in State College, PA. The goal of the Center of Excellence is to be a world‐class research
facility and to drive global developments in the field of carbon research, and develop new, differentiated materials and material technologies related to Carbon and tribology. The Center of Excellence leads in innovating new formulations and processes, serves as a hub for academic collaboration with Penn State and other key university faculties worldwide, and acts as a focal point for R&D with raw material suppliers. The
partnership with Penn State enables significant progress in the development of carbon materials for a range of sectors and applications. The long‐term goal of the center is to support Morgan’s mission to deliver world‐class materials science solutions that meet the engineering challenges of customers worldwide, safely, ethically and
efficiently.
Carbon Science Centre of Excellence – Research Technician
The Carbon Science Centre of Excellence (CoE) seeks candidates to fill Research Technician positions, whose primary task is to carry out and facilitate experimental work in the CoE laboratory and pilot plant facility. The positions are based in the CoE at State College, Pennsylvania, with occasional travel (<10%) to manufacturing
sites to participate in scale‐up of technology or evaluation of test samples. Performance objectives of the roles will include:
Ensure and promote the Morgan thinkSAFE values and program through daily activities.- Under supervision of a staff scientist:
- conduct day‐to‐day laboratory and pilot plant activities, including measurement/recording of data and oversight of safe and efficient operation of experimental equipment;
- carry out routine tasks accurately;
- prepare specimens and samples;
- maintain and operate standard laboratory equipment;
- build novel application testing equipment;
- exercise proper handling of feedstocks and experimental product materials through various processing steps carried out with laboratory‐ and pilot‐scale equipment, including mixing, blending, milling, classifying, forming operations, thermal processing and chemical treatment;
- carry out material production and processing trials at laboratory and pilot scale;
- record, collate and interpret experimental data;
- maintain records and report results of experimental trials;
- write brief reports summarizing experimental testing results.
- Support development of quicker and more efficient routes and processes for materials development.
- Participate fully in daily, weekly and monthly thinkSAFE activities, including development of safe operating procedures, site safety audits, hazards assessments, and all required safety reporting responsibilities.
- Investigate and resolve technical and safety issues that may arise in the experimental apparatus, working with internal and external personnel as necessary.
- Work with limited supervision to conduct daily experimental work.
- Contribute to the success of the CoE as an individual under direct supervision of staff scientists and as a member of project‐focused teams.
Education and Experience
- A high school degree or equivalent.
- Some college or post‐secondary training, e.g., military, in a technical field is preferable.
- At least one year work experience as a part of a laboratory or research and development staff in an academic, military, or industrial entity.
- Knowledge of basic electrical and mechanical concepts required to build, troubleshoot, and/or repair laboratory equipment and instrumentation.
- Desirable but not required:
- experience operating chemical processes and/or manufacturing or production systems;
- experience with computer‐controlled equipment and data acquisition systems;
- experience with computer programming languages;
Requirements
- Education and work experience as described above.
- Familiarity with working with experimental apparatus and/or analytical equipment.
- Familiarity with computers running Windows and Microsoft Office.
- Capable of working with chemicals, following standard safe‐handling procedures.
