Job Description Summary
The Penn Geomicrobiology Laboratory in the Department of Earth and Environmental Science at the University of Pennsylvania seeks a full-time Research Scientist to oversee the continuous cultivation of deep-sea anaerobic thermophilic microorganisms to support research on their physiology and bioenergetics. Research activities include anaerobic cultivation of chemosynthetic microorganisms, epifluorescence microscopy, spectrophotometry and gas chromatography. The position also involves training of students in the laboratory as well as routine data collection, analysis, interpretation and synthesis. Other responsibilities include assistance with general maintenance of laboratory equipment and spaces and other managerial duties under the direct supervision of the Principal Investigator.

This is a one-year term appointment, with the possibility of renewal.

Job Description

The Department of Earth and Environmental Science (EES) combines elements of geology, physics, chemistry, biology and mathematics to study the Earth and its relationship with life. Areas of inquiry range from the atomic and molecular to the largest scales, from ancient times to the present and into the future. Research in EES encompasses minerals and rocks, soils and sediments, mountains and landscapes, the atmosphere, the hydrosphere and climate, fossilized and living organisms, and human impacts on the environment. DUTIES:
Research Specialist B :
The Research Specialist will apply sterile microbiology techniques for the preparation of anoxic solutions and the batch and continuous cultivation of anaerobic chemosynthetic microorganisms in the laboratory. The individual will collect and analyze samples from time-series experiments for microscopy, downstream microbiological/molecular assays, as well as gas and aqueous chemical measurements. Data will be managed according to scientific standards and synthesized in technical scientific reports and peer-reviewed publications. Research activities will also include training of students in the laboratory and experiments with occasional, brief off-hours sampling. The candidate will help with the general maintenance of the laboratory and other managerial duties under the direct supervision of the Principal Investigator, including: laboratory purchase orders, maintenance of laboratory spaces/equipment, and on-call responsibilities in the rare event of a laboratory emergency. Opportunities will exist for the Research Specialist to present research findings at laboratory and national meetings (contingent upon funding) and to obtain authorship on scientific manuscripts.

Research Specialist C level:
Same as above under limited supervision, in addition to:
  • collecting published data for meta-analyses on microbial physiology, metabolism and phylogeny.
  • perform basic genomic analyses as assigned.
QUALIFICATIONS:
Research Specialist B level:
Bachelor's degree in a natural science discipline such as microbiology, chemistry, earth science, or environmental sciences, plus the ability to translate, adapt and apply this knowledge. Between 1 and 3 years of experience in a laboratory setting, or equivalent combination of education and experience.

Research Specialist C level:
Bachelor's degree in a natural science discipline such as microbiology, chemistry, earth science, or environmental sciences, plus the ability to translate, adapt and apply this knowledge. Between 3 and 5 years of experience in a laboratory setting or equivalent combination of education and experience.

  • The ideal candidate will be self-motivated, organized, attentive to detail, able to work both independently and as part of a team, and have strong oral and written communication skills.
  • Candidates for either level should have experience in two or more of the following:
  • sterile technique for the preparation of microbiological media/reagents and cultivation of microorganisms
  • qualitative and quantitative analyses involving epifluoresence microscopy
  • aqueous or gas chemistry measurements (UV-VIS spectrophotometer, gas chromatography)
  • coordination, collection and documentation of samples (e.g.., biomass, filtrates), and data analysis from time-series experiments with minimum supervision
  • molecular methods such as gel electrophoresis, polymerase chain reaction, as well as extraction and quantification of nucleic acids
Preferred Qualifications :
  • Experience with anaerobic microbial cultivation
  • Experience with continuous (chemostat) cultivation
  • Experience with scanning electron microscopy and transmission electron microscopy
  • Experience handling laboratory equipment and managing laboratory housekeeping activities
Targeted Pay Range:
Research Specialist B: $ 37,220 - $52,000

Research Specialist C: $ 43,919 - $60,000

This Targeted Pay Range is only applicable to this job posting. All salary offers are made based on the candidate's qualifications, experience, skills, and education as they directly relate to the requirements of the position, as well as internal and market factors and grade profile.
