The Respiratory Therapy Apprentice (RTA) is a short-term, experience building role that works under supervision of the Registered Respiratory Therapist (RRT) in the clinical setting and participates appropriately in the patient care delivery process.Performs assigned tasks and patient care duties, as designated and supervised by a Registered Respiratory Therapist, in keeping with the Utah DOPL guidance for a Respiratory Therapy Apprentice.

Scope
The Respiratory Therapy Apprentice may be utilized during the last year of Respiratory Therapy school under the State of Utah guidelines for a Respiratory Therapy Apprentice. The RTA is intended as a short-term interim role until graduation, licensing and eligibility requirements of a Respiratory Therapist are met, permanent licensing is required.
Supervision: Respiratory Therapy Apprentice will be supervised generally by physicians and directly/indirectly by Registered Respiratory Therapists. Registered Respiratory Therapists are accountable for co-signing all medical record documentation by the Respiratory Therapy Apprentice and will verify any care plan changes before initiation of such by the Respiratory Therapy Apprentice.
Job Essentials
- Demonstrates understanding of the steps in the Respiratory Therapy process and how the patient plan of care is developed, implemented, and revised to meet the needs of the patient (under supervision of an RRT).
- Routinely observes and discusses assigned aspects of care with the RRT regarding patient care delivery.
- Recognizes and demonstrates legal/ethical implications of care delivery by: Practicing as a Respiratory Therapy Apprentice under the supervision of the RRT; Complying with regulatory standards; Completing accurate documentation; and maintaining confidentiality.
- Demonstrates responsibility and accountability for patient care delivery within the defined scope of the role (under the supervision of the RRT).
- Other categories of duties include: equipment and supply, data outcomes, Durable Medical Equipment discharges, student orientation, Blood Gas, patient calls, and EKGs.
Specific Patient Care Interventions allowed under supervision by an RRT:
- Suction
- O2 rounds & therapy
- Airway Clearance Techniques/Neuromuscular RET Protocol
- Inhaled medications nebulizer/MDI, this does not include inhaled vasodilators or specialty gases, until ICU requirements are met.
- Holter Monitor setup
- Remote Patient Monitoring set-up
- Assessments/Evaluations with care plan changes upon assigned supervising RRT approval only
- Patient Education (e.g., tobacco cessation, COPD, asthma, OSA)
- End-tidal CO2 set-up and monitoring
- Pulmonary Function Testing (PFT)
- Sleep Testing
- Positive Airway Pressure (PAP) for sleep disordered conditions, not respiratory failure on general patient care floors
- Provide all therapies that are done on a general patient care floor, if the patient requires resuscitation, the apprentice may initiate resuscitation other than delivery calls until appropriate Intensive Care Unit (ICU) orientation is complete. The apprentice should not initiate Early Lung Recruitment (ELR), non-invasive or invasive ventilation but should contact supervising RT to assume care., until they have completed ICU orientation and clinical competency is documented.
- After 400 documented hours working at the same facility the RTA may begin orienting in the ICU and AFTER completion of ICU orientation and documentation of clinical competency, they may work in the ICU with the supervising RRT that is also assigned to that unit. The apprentice should not be assigned to an ICU as the only caregiver.
Note: In terms of Specific Patient Care Interventions, the supervising RRT is required to review and co-sign all RT Apprentice documentation in the medical record.
Minimum Qualifications
- Current enrollment (in good standing) in the final year of a CoARC accredited Respiratory Therapy Program. Status will be verified from program administration via the Utah Division of Professional Licensing Verification Template.
- Current Utah Respiratory Therapy Apprentice License.
- Current BLS certification. Must obtain PALS and ACLS within 6 months of hire as required by facility.
Preferred Qualifications
- Computer knowledge (word processing, spreadsheets, email and/or database program experience).
- Experience working in a healthcare related environment.
- Current member of the AARC/USRC.
- Inventory and distribution experience.
- Experience working with mechanical and/electronic devices.
- Demonstrated effective phone etiquette skill.
- Phlebotomy and/or EKG experience.
- ACLS and PALS certification.

- Ongoing need for employee to see and read information, labels, assess patient needs, operate monitors, identify equipment and supplies.
- Frequent interactions with patient care providers, patients, and visitors that require employee to verbally communicate as well as hear and understand spoken information, alarms, needs, and issues quickly and accurately, particularly during emergency situations.
- Manual dexterity of hands and fingers to manipulate complex and delicate equipment with precision and accuracy. This includes frequent computer use and typing for documenting patient care, accessing needed information, medication preparation, etc.
- Expected to lift and utilize full range of movement including bending to retrieve, lift, and carry supplies and equipment. Typically includes items of varying weights, up to and including heavy items.
- Need to walk to obtain and distribute supplies and equipment. This includes pushing/pulling portable equipment, including heavy items. Often required to navigate crowded and busy rooms (full of equipment, power cords on the floor, etc).
- May be expected to stand in a stationary position for an extended period of time.
