What you will do

  • Be visible to the crews and supervisors.
  • Work in a mill environment where the work areas are hot, cold, and/or noisy. The individual must be physically capable of standing, walking, and climbing stairs for up to 10 hours per day wearing the required Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) in the industrial environment.
  • Must have an excellent understanding of paper machine process systems and how the different systems interact with each other which include the following process systems: steam, white water, compressed air, natural gas, temporary boiler installation, stock prep areas, stock approach systems for each machine, Yankee hoods for each machine, mill water systems, and effluent systems for each machine. In addition, candidates must be knowledgeable of equipment within Paper Machine Maintenance and Napkins
  • Conduct initial and 30-day follow-up on incident reports and incident trend analysis for your department on a quarterly basis utilizing the Incident Report Database.
  • Conduct scheduled tours for hazards (i.e. VPP Quarterly Inspection) and ensure follow up is conducted by appropriate personnel by utilizing the Safety Concern Log.
  • Prepare, distribute and update lockout sheets from work order/new equipment installations & process system changes, make & hang tags, update the lockout database on the intranet, perform routine Lockout audits, and understand process systems enough to actively perform lockouts during construction projects, down days, and major outages in cooperation with operations. This individual is also expected to assist Machine Managers to plan and implement the required lockouts for planned and unplanned down days that occur on the Paper machines.
  • Perform routine Confined Space Audits of completed Confined Space Entry permits and provide operational support of the CPD policies and procedures around confined space entry to include Entrant and Attendant responsibilities.
  • Participate in incident root cause investigations; review incidents and Safety Meeting reports to the paper machine and maintenance safety meetings.
  • Complete basic job screening worksheets; perform ergonomic hazard assessments and provide timely follow-up to recommendations.
  • Assist other department safety coordinators as needed; act as the back up for the Converting/Plant Support Warehouse Safety Coordinator when they are absent.
  • Be knowledgeable of the following safety programs for CPD: incident investigation database, equipment tracker database, JD Edwards work order entry system, skill tracks database, safety concerns log, and interlock guarding systems.
  • Facilitate the development, review and approvals of Job Safety Analysis and Standard Operating Procedures.
  • Work with the departments to ensure appropriate safety related training is conducted (i.e. SOP/JSA, Incident Investigation, Lift Trucks, etc.) including the support of department supervisors by providing safety meeting packets and acting as the committee chair for the hazard alert committee. Mentor and coach your department Safety Chiefs and committee people to provide safety, health, & environmental guidance and/or training.
  • Become the Certified Trainer for forklift trucks, man lifts, and Taylor Dunn for your department and perform initial training, refresher training, and 3 year certifications of employees for your department as required.
  • Attend professional development classes as needed; i.e., conferences, Industrial Hygiene, Fall Protection, etc.
  • Provide guidance and assist the yearly maintenance of the Clarity On-line EHS Annual Refresher.
  • Up to a four-year commitment working primarily days but with some flexibility to accommodate training schedules, workloads, and unexpected safety/production issues. This position may be renewed one time for an additional 4 years based on job performance.
  • Applicant will need to have a working knowledge of email, Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint, and be willing to acquire any other computer skills in use with current programs or those that may be developed in the future.
  • Have ability to interact with individuals from a variety of work experiences, attitudes, and abilities. Communicating with everyone in a positive manner is a must with good effective listening skills. Must prioritize both their time and projects and maintain good organizational skills. Accurate record keeping is imperative. Is a self-starter and able to work with minimal supervision or direction.

Individual must possess an understanding and knowledge of the CPD safety policies and procedures regarding the following OSHA standards: general safety, hazardous energy control, guarding, confined space, crane operation, slings and harnesses, fall protection, and powered industrial trucks. In addition, the individual must be willing to support these policies and procedures or work to change them as appropriate.

Individual must have a working knowledge of Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint, and be willing to acquire computer skills to maintain records, send/receive email, create work orders in JD Edwards, create safety concerns, generate documents and accommodate any future needs.

Individual must demonstrate positive communication skills, organizational ability, and time management with all employees and other entities in a team environment. Individual must be able to prioritize time and projects; good record keeping is imperative. Individual must be able to travel on an occasional basis, and work extended hours during shutdowns or when required. Candidates for this position will be asked to demonstrate their competency with these job skills and qualifications during the selection process.
