Under the supervision of a District Court Judge, performs general secretarial functions for a Judge. Prepares court orders and other legal documents. Records court proceedings as needed.
This position is a part-time, temporary position funded under a State grant received under a Virtual Felony Backlog Grant. This position will conclude April 30, 2024.
Receives and screens phone calls; responds to inquiries or refers to the appropriate person. Receives requests for adjournments and approves, rejects or refers to a Judge in accordance with court policy.
Performs general secretarial services for a Judge; composes and types correspondence, court orders, legal documents, and other materials. Enters case information into the computer system.
Establishes and maintains a filing system.
Acts as backup to the Court Services Officer as needed.
Utilizes electronic recording equipment to record court proceedings. Prepares a log of activity during recording, including identification of speakers, notations of actions, and introduction of exhibits.
Requests speakers to clarify inaudible statements or spell technical or unfamiliar terminology as necessary for proper recording of proceedings.
Develops a running glossary of unusual or scientific terms or names, and takes custody of exhibits as necessary.
Maintains files of transcripts and all other related materials.
When daily court business is completed, can prepare verbatim transcripts of court proceedings upon request if certified by the Michigan Supreme Court to prepare transcripts. Proofreads transcripts, certifies copies, and prepares billings as appropriate.
High school graduation or its equivalent, preferably with advanced legal secretarial training.
Two years of legal secretarial experience required.
A high level of confidentiality.
Excellent interpersonal, communication, organizational and computer information systems skills.
