Job Summary
The Section Supervisor of Phlebotomy and Processing will be responsible for guiding both phlebotomy and lab tech staff by ensuring specimen collection, delivering and processing of laboratory specimens is performed in compliance with federal, state, and regulatory agency standards. They are also responsible for maintaining up to date policies and procedures, efficiently overseeing personnel and technical problems, as well as day to day operations to keep he department functional. The Section Supervisor ensures regulatory compliance and competencies for their area of responsibility. They are also engaged in performance of laboratory operations and will work closely with other supervisory staff in the department.

Responsibilities

1. Ensures department and staff are compliant with regulatory and accrediting agencies and develops plans when inspections require improvements.
2. Holds oneself accountable and responsible for operations of the section through leadership and direction to ensure appropriate scheduling and timely draws.
3. Ensure policies and procedures are kept up to date for regulatory compliance.
4. Performs routine rounding to ensure collaboration, understanding of issues, and workflow with observational opportunities of staff work performance.
5. Oversees accuracy in reporting results and ensures documentation of the results are properly maintained.
6. Ensure proper equipment is in place for all necessary areas to maintain efficient functionality.
7. Provide on-call assistance to the department for all problem-solving and staffing needs.
8. Assist the Director of Lab Administration with budget oversight to ensure cost-effective care and ensure a balance of FTE’s, supplies, and replacement of equipment.
9. Ensure cross-training and perform phlebotomy and specimen processing as needed.
10. Follows safety, life safety, and infection control procedures for self, patients, and others at all times.
11. Completes, submits and/or assists with all documentation required by Human Resources in order to hire new employees.
12. Ensures training competency checklists are completed and discussed with the employee to establish developmental, training or remedial training needs/goals.
13. Sets clear expectations for behavior, productivity, mentoring, and setting of developmental goals.
14. Completes job performance evaluations as required by the organization in a timely manner providing staff with documented feedback and action plans reflective of challenging opportunities for growth and improvement.
15. Completes coaching and disciplinary actions in a timely manner after careful investigation.
16. Recognizes positive behavior and contributions to the organization utilizing praise, appreciation and rewards.
17. Ensures compliance with time and attendance, dress code, and safety practices of staff working in the laboratory.
18. Supervise and maintains competency, continuing education, proficiency testing to uphold professional standards of the phlebotomy and laboratory technician staff.
19. Assists lab administrative staff with inspections, projects or evaluation of new practices or procedures.
20. Initiates formal/informal activities with employees to develop departmental cohesion and collegiality.
21. Participates in mandatory education, huddles, conferences, and meetings both in and out of the laboratory department to promote processes and policies, remain up to date and for customer relations.
22. Participates in tracers, mock surveys, and survey activities in order to maintain compliance with accrediting agencies.
23. Other duties as assigned.

Education
1. Successful completion of an associate’s degree program or higher.

Experience
1. A minimum of four years of experience as a phlebotomist/ laboratory technician in a hospital or medical setting.
2. Phlebotomy management or supervisory experience preferred.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
1. Knowledge of medical terminology and phlebotomy procedures
2. Excellent communication, time management, teaching, and organizational skills. Demonstrates skills in accomplishing operations of the section through personal organization and time management, adaptability, motivation and good decision making.
3. Ability to lead, motivate and coach employees in addition to acting as a team player in the Lab Operations Team.
4. Ability to handle all patient, visitor, and hospital staff concerns in a professional manner in compliance with the Mission and Values of Denver Health.

Computers and Technology
1. Microsoft Word and Excel experience required.

Certificates, Licenses and Registration
1. Phlebotomy or Medical Assistant certification preferred.

Supervisory Responsibilities
1. This position will be responsible for, but not limited to, hiring, terminating, performance management, coaching, supervision, fostering teamwork, training and development of one or more employees.

Salary:

$58,900.00 - $85,500.00/yr
