The University of Pittsburgh Cancer Institute is seeking a Senior Laboratory Technologist for the UPMC Hillman Cancer Center Head and Neck Cancer Specialized Program of Research Excellence (SPORE). Our research program is focused on molecular mechanisms of head and neck cancer, novel biomarker discovery, and developing potential drug candidates with the overall aim of early diagnosis and treatment of head and neck. The premise of current research projects includes preclinical, basic, as well as translational research using multi-dimensional molecular biological and cell-based model platforms leading to clinical trials. This incumbent will supervise aspects of the laboratory for the faculty researcher and Director of the Head and Neck/Endocrine Pathology Center of Excellence, Dr. Raja R. Seethala in Shadyside. Optimally, the candidate should have a background in cellular immunology. The candidate’s primary roles will be will human tissue processing (blood and tumor), maintaining inventory of reagents and tissues (e.g. cDNA, cells, tissue slides), and collaboration and communication with clinical coordinators and clinicians. The incumbent will also perform day-to-day activities such as laboratory organization and maintenance, procuring and sourcing various lab supplies, cell culture, ordering and purchasing, updating protocols and methods. The selected candidate will also perform various laboratory assays (flow cytometry, PCR, Western blot, ELISA) and must be willing to work with adenoviral and lentiviral vectors.

The incumbent must confer with researchers, faculty, and representatives of potential granting agencies concerning research needs and methods, and actively participate with collaborators both inside and outside the institute and work dynamically with the principal investigator/medical director to prioritize the aims and activities of the research projects. As the project develops, the incumbent will also be responsible for interviewing and selection, orientation and training, work assignment, supervision, and review of new and senior researcher employees in the group. The incumbent will also be expected to comply with specific institutional and government requirements and regulations. The selected candidate must be scientifically passionate and possess excellent organizational and communication skills.


Bachelor’s degree must be in a science or related field and must have two to three years of experience. Optimally should have a background in molecular and cellular immunology. Additional experience may be accepted in lieu of the education requirement.
