The Opportunity:

The Senior Operations Manager will lead and have full performance responsibility for a large ready-mix business unit in the Northern Virginia market. The ideal candidate will have lead a similar or larger business unit and have the ability to grow into roles of increased responsibility. The area of responsibility includes approximately 20 ready-mix concrete plants spanning over 8 Virginia Counties. Responsibilities will include managing and focusing on measures associated with safety, productivity, quality, maintenance, cost, capital expenditures, and strategic operational decisions.

Who You’ll Manage:

The Senior Operations Manager will directly supervise four (4) Production Managers. Reporting up through each Production Manager will be several Plant Supervisors, Quality Control Technicians, and Plant Mechanics. Reporting through Plant Supervisors will be numerous drivers and other plant-based hourly employees.

Who You’ll Work With:

The Senior Operation Manager will work directly with and receive support from several department heads and support groups to lead the business unit to achieve industry-leading safety performance and operational excellence. The position will work closely with the Sales Team, Dispatch Manager, Quality Control Manager, Maintenance Manager, Business Performance Analyst, the Safety Group, HR Group, Support Services & Engineering, and Procurement.

Who You’ll Work For:

The Senior Operations Manager will work directly for the Vice President and General Manager responsible for the ready mix business unit in Virginia, Maryland, and the District of Columbia.

What You’ll Do:

Promote Safety. Take an active role in prioritizing safety for yourself and others to ensure all assigned plants have zero accidents and comply with all Vulcan policies and procedures.

Manage Employee Relations. Provide strong leadership, training, team building, and supervision to all operational employees within the area to support the operational function of the business. Guide all employee recruitment, training, development, and retention strategies.

Maintain Compliance. Ensure all assigned plants comply with Vulcan’s safety and operations policies and procedures. Work closely with Company resources to ensure that all present and future permits and plans are current to Company Ready-Mix Concrete operations. Ensure that materials follow specifications and quality standards.

Develop Strategy. Establish short and long-term business planning strategies and actions to achieve them. Develop an annual operating budget that includes production volume and capital improvements. Work with sales and operations teams to drive revenue and market share.

Manage Process Improvement. Direct process improvement goals and objectives for assigned plants to meet productivity and efficiency goals. Establish and measure performance standards for technical support groups.

Ensure Economic Profit. Manage the annual budget process. Ensure assigned plants meet or exceed budget goals and objectives, improve return on their assets, and direct the capital budget for each site to ensure that all capital projects are completed according to AFE and cost projections.

Coach and Guide Others. Provide strong leadership skills by motivating and mentoring all employees. Set performance standards for employees and monitor performance.

Skills You’ll Need:

Experience. 10 plus years of experience in the ready mix industry with a track record of progressive responsibility managing a significant area of responsibility.

Leadership and Management Skills. Must be able to provide strong leadership and guidance to employees, both direct and indirect reports, to motivate and maintain interpersonal relationships.

Operational Knowledge. Must demonstrate knowledge and understanding of ready-mix concrete and equipment, OSHA regulations, engineering principles and procedures, and quality control systems and processes.

Interpersonal Skills. Must be an excellent motivator and team builder. Must be able to form strong social relationships and effectively communicate with internal and external audiences.

Financial Knowledge. Must know and have experience managing financial performance to established targets, meeting or exceeding performance goals.
