Job Title: Research and Development Senior Lab Technician


If you have four years of job related experience; successful performance as a Fisher Barton Lab Technician Level 2 role; or have completed coursework in materials engineering or a related field, have a passion for life long learning, are a good problem solver, are process driven, good at multi-tasking, demonstrate the ability to delegate, have good peer relationship skills, and can manage complex processes and are looking for an opportunity to grow, a role as a Fisher Barton Research and Development Senior Lab Technician might be for you. You will ensure the smooth operation of the Technology Center’s metallurgical and mechanical testing lab through equipment maintenance, consumable purchasing, calibration coordination, training team members, and indepently completing routine materials testing and analysis. You will also direct and manage existing laboratory testing procedures as well as the development of new procedures and support other Fisher Barton divisions with routine quality control work and testing. You will do this by:

  • Conducting routine laboratory testing, including: metallographic sample preparation, spectrometer chemistry measurement, macro and microhardness, standardized laboratory wear resistance testing, operate light microscopes, scanning electron microscopy, impact testing, and tensile/compression/fatigue testing
  • Assisting in metallurgical analysis relating to process control and product development
  • Developing and performing new test procedures for analysis of materials and components
  • Communicating with internal and external stakeholders
  • Perform failure analysis
  • Interpretating microstructure
  • Writing work instructions for less common testing
  • Developing new testing procedures for common laboratory testing
  • Directing and training level 1 and 2 technicians
  • Managing the workflow through the laboratory

Required Qualifications:

  • 4 years of job related experience; or successful performance in a Fisher Barton Lab Technician 2 role; or coursework in materials engineering or a related field
  • Technical writing capabilities
  • Basic knowledge of Microsoft Office including Outlook, Excel, Word, and PowerPoint


Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience working in a quality lab, metallurgical lab or as a process technician
  • Experience working in a manufacturing environment
  • Experience with welding


Physical | Visual Demands:

  • Must be able to lift up to 50lbs.
  • Must be able to wear proper personal protective equipment (ear plugs, safety glasses, respirator etc…)

  • Manufacturing: Loud (Examples: metal can, manufacturing department, large earth moving equipment)
