Position Purpose
The Signmaker is responsible for design, creation and installation of campus signs to Dartmouth’s specifications. Works with clients to ensure specific requirements are met. Uses graphic and sign-making software, as well as tools and equipment related to sign-making, to design and create signs, and prepare them for mounting. Designs for a wide variety of signs, including stickers, vehicle graphics, windows, floors and many other unique projects. Manages placement and installation. Maintains inventory for Sign Shop. Under minimal supervision, may work either independently or as part of a team.

Required Qualifications - Education and Yrs Exp
Associates or equivalent combination of education and experience

Required Qualifications - Skills, Knowledge and Abilities
  • Associate’s degree in commercial graphic design or equivalent
  • Three to five years’ experience in graphic design and commercial signage
  • Computer skills associated with commercial graphic design software
  • Proven commitment to exceptional levels of accuracy and attention to detail in workmanship
  • Valid driver’s license, and ability to qualify under the Dartmouth Approved Driver Policy


Preferred Qualifications
  • Five years in the sign-making industry preferred
  • Relevant Bachelor’s degree preferred
  • Time-management skills, proven self-motivation and problem-solving skills.
  • Must be a team player with great attitude, and high-level of commitment to customer service.
  • Ability to follow processes, understand deadlines


Must have successfully completed the following training prior to performing work to which the training relates:
  • Driver Safety
  • Hazard Communication
  • Respirator Training, Fit, and Physical Examination

Key Accountabilities

Description
  • Meets with customers to discuss their specific signage needs. Ensures that signs meet clients’ specifications in terms of text, font, size and medium.
  • Creates estimates for signage to provide to customers.
  • Uses graphic and sign-making software, plans and designs signs according to client specifications.
  • Selects the appropriate tools and equipment to create signs according to client specifications.
  • Performs signage painting as required.
  • Inspects work sites to determine procedure, material and equipment needed, as required.
  • Prepares the site for installation by removing old signage, preparing the surface and structure
  • Loads and transports signs, tools, and materials to the location safely.
  • Ensures the effective measurement, placement, connection, and installation of the sign.
  • Mounts and installs the signs in accordance with all safety code protocols.
  • Performs maintenance and repairs to signs, as needed. Performs removal of signs as requested.
  • Operates and maintains the tools and equipment in accordance with safety protocols.
  • Performs inventory management for Sign Shop , including ordering ordering new stock, shop requirements.
  • Assists with other Building Repair Shop duties, as required.
  • Must be willing to attend trainings, as required.

  • Works from ladders, scaffolds, platforms, aerial lifts.
  • Work requires bending, kneeling, standing, climbing, and working in stretched, cramped or awkward positions.

  • Work is performed indoors, outdoors, in bad weather, and in areas that are dirty, or smoky and where fumes (e.g., tar) are present.
  • Work involves wearing special or protective clothing such as aprons or overalls, gloves, and goggles.
