SNIP Clinic Veterinarian Assistant Job at Kentucky Humane Society
Responsible for assisting veterinarians and assistants with handling, surgical and anesthetic procedures ensuring daily and high level care of all surgical patients.
- Gather information from clients during intake including brief animal health history.
- Assists Veterinary Surgeons with conducting physical examinations of animals to determine surgical fitness; reports health concerns to attending veterinarian.
- Cleans, prepares, and sterilizes instruments and medical supplies for Veterinarian’s use.
- Prepares animals for sterilization surgery; assists Veterinarian in surgery as needed.
- Restrains monitors and maintains patients during induction, intubation, and anesthesia.
- Observes animals post surgery to detect any abnormal behavior or symptoms and promptly reports them to Veterinarian.
- Stays current in knowledge of emergency drugs and protocol.
- Provides in-person and telephone client services, education and answer questions.
- Actively promotes spay and neuter initiatives.
- Informs clients of animal health and surgical aftercare instructions.
- Cleans and sanitizes animal facility areas including treatment rooms, kennels, cages, work areas and public areas.
- Maintain and re-stock all areas of the clinic.
- Maintains a healthy and safe environment for animals and people.
- Minimum 1 year experience working with animals
- Previous work experience in the animal health field preferred
- Ability to work in a fast paced environment with little direct supervision
- Strong problem-solving and decision-making skills
- Ability to accurately perform basic mathematical calculation
- Advanced dog / cat knowledge
- Ability to handle multiple tasks simultaneously
- Ability to complete paperwork efficiently and accurately
- Excellent interpersonal skills

- High school degree or equivalent required
Physical Demands/Working Environment:
- Frequent bending, reaching, feeling and or handling, kneeling, walking and standing on a regular basis while performing job functions.
- Frequently lifts, carries or otherwise moves and positions objects weighing up to and exceeding 50lbs.
- Individual will have extended periods of talking or listening.
- Includes working in an indoor surgical environment handling animals
