Western Michigan University Homer Stryker M.D. School of Medicine(WMed) is seeking a Student Affairs Diversity, Equity, Inclusion and Culture Coordinator. This position will assist in creating a campus environment that educates and affirms diversity and supports WMed's campus development to become a more inclusive campus.
Responsibilities:
- Provide guidance and support for the development and implementation of a Student Affairs DEI plan.
- Assist with strategic planning activities and initiatives consistent with relevant goals and objectives of WMed’s DEI and Culture Initiatives and generate related reports.
- Act as liaison between the offices of Diversity and Inclusiveness and Health Equity and Community Affairs and the Department of Student Affairs.
- Liase with the Manager of DEI and Culture for institutional initiatives involving students and prospective students.
- Liase with the Program Specialist for Culture and Belonging for institutional initiatives involving students and prospective students.
- Liase with Manager of Pathway Programs for institutional initiatives involving prospective students.
- Offer advice and counseling to Student Affairs faculty and staff on existing diversity initiatives and experiences.
- Work with the directors in the department of Student Affairs to provide on-going assessment of policies and procedures regarding matters related to student diversity, equity and inclusion.
- Work with Admissions team to help recruit diverse students and assist with ensuring medical school applicants are provided diversity related information.
- Conduct a systematic evaluation of student affairs policies and procedures to ascertain the extent to which they reflect unintentional bias.
- Organize efforts to collect relevant student data and maintain records of activities, policies, and processes related to diversity initiatives.
- Coordinate DEI initiatives and experiences with a student focus.
- In collaboration with the Chief Diversity Officer, provide bias training, cultural competency training, etc., as needed.
- Develop relationships with under-represented students and others who engage in diversity efforts.
- Serve as a co-advisor to student interest groups and organizations with a diversity-based mission.
- Attend student forums as an advocate for matters regarding diversity, equity, inclusion and culture.
- Coordinate Student Affairs representation and participation in DEI initiatives at WMed
- Stay professionally connected to remain informed of national trends and current publications on relevant DEI and culture topics.
- Coordinate and/or facilitate small group mentoring sessions to promote DEI and culture.
- Conduct an annual diversity needs assessment in Student Affairs to monitor progress.
- Create and manage a formal mentor-mentee match program for those who self-identify as URM.
- Availability to assist with large student affairs events such as graduation, match day, and transitions week activities.
- Availability to occasionally work on weekends and evenings to complete time sensitive projects.
- Acquires knowledge for new technology and policy/procedure revisions.
- All other duties as assigned.
EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE:
- Bachelor's degree required with experience in Higher Education Administration, College Student Personnel, or a Social Sciences or Humanities discipline preferred.
- 1-3 years of full-time professional experience in programming and outreach efforts related to diversity, equity, inclusion, and/or wellness, preferably in a higher education setting.
- Strategic planning experience.
- Experience working with a diverse student population.
OTHER SKILLS AND ABILITIES:
- Strong project management skills and ability to track details across multiple complex projects.
- Content familiarity and a commitment to stay current on issues pertaining to culture, DEI, and wellness.
- Ability to engage in strategic planning processes.
- Ability to coordinate/facilitate workgroups.
- Strong written/verbal interpersonal and communication skills, including presentations and public speaking skills.
- Ability to work independently and collaboratively, understanding the needs of various stakeholders.
- Ability to listen to others and maintain professionalism and confidentiality with sensitive information.

WMed Health is the clinical practice of the medical school with more than 300 providers offering comprehensive primary care and specialty services in several locations throughout Kalamazoo, Portage, and Battle Creek. The Department of Pathology faculty serve as the Office of the Medical Examiner for counties throughout Michigan and northern Indiana.
The W.E. Upjohn M.D. Campus located in downtown Kalamazoo serves as the primary educational facility with faculty and administrative offices, student study and social spaces, team-based learning halls, a state-of-the-art Simulation Center accredited by the Society for Simulation in Healthcare, basic science research labs, as well as toxicology and forensic pathology labs.
