The Historic Cockayne Farmstead in Glen Dale, WV (a project of the Marshall County Historical Society), is seeking a Summer Associate AmeriCorps VISTA member to lead summer youth and children’s programming at the site.
The VISTA member will serve a minimum of 35 hrs. per week at the site for 10 weeks, beginning May 22. As part of this position, the VISTA member will receive both a cash stipend (every two weeks) and an education award (at the end of the service term).
The VISTA member will be responsible for developing and implementing 2 weekly programs for children, at least one of which will focus on teaching local history, or historical crafts like candle-dipping, weaving, basketry, etc. (applicants are not required to already be familiar with these crafts).
The VISTA member will also implement a children’s gardening program using Cockayne’s community garden, and a Junior Docent program to encourage young volunteers to take an active role in the community.
The VISTA member will also present Cockayne educational material at local summer camps or library programs.
To develop and promote these programs, the VISTA member will seek out appropriate community partners and funding sources.
The ideal candidate will have some history, museum, or education background, will be engaging with children, self-driven and organized. Applicants must be at least 18 years old.
This VISTA position is offered through West Virginia’s Promise. West Virginia’s Promise-The Alliance for Youth is a statewide program that mobilizes partners across the state to strengthen the capacity of local communities to develop and support young people. West Virginia’s Promise places AmeriCorps VISTA members throughout the state to assist in providing all children with the Five Promises:
- Caring Adults such as parents, teacher, mentors, neighbors and coaches
- Safe Places that offer constructive activities when young people are not in school
- A Healthy Start with healthy bodies, healthy minds and healthful habits
- An Effective Education that prepares young people for successful work and lifelong learning
- Opportunities to Help Others through service.
Summer Associate VISTA Criteria:
- SA must be at least 18 years of age at the time of placement
- SA must not be listed on the National Sex Offenders Public Registry
- SA must commit and serve on a full-time basis for 10 weeks, a minimum of 35 hours per week
- SA do not receive any person/medical days off
- SA may have outside employment during the project period (cannot exceed 20 hours per week)
Summer Associate VISTA members will receive a stipend of $3,375.40 over the 10 week service period. At the end of the service term, the member will also receive either a $345.00 cash stipend or an education award of $1311.11 that can be applied to student loans or future college study.
