JOB TITLE: IN-SCHOOL SUSPENSION SPECIALIST

GENERAL STATEMENT OF JOB

Provides direct services to those high-risk students assigned to in-school suspension who need opportunities to develop the degree of self-discipline required to take advantage of the school’s academic program.

REPORTS TO: Principal or his/her designee

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS

• 
  Schedules and operates the daily in-school suspension program in the middle school

• 
  Provides tutoring, counseling, and on-going academic instruction to students assigned to the Center

• 
  Helps students examine their behavior and the consequences of that behavior

• 
  Maintains a therapeutic environment conducive to improving the behavior of disruptive students

• 
  Provides orientation to each student assigned to the program

• 
  Makes available the necessary supplies and equipment for students to complete their work

• 
  Makes referrals to counselors and administrators in community agencies and the school when appropriate

• 
  Initiates and maintains effective communication with student’s parents, teachers, and counselors regarding student performance and attendance through a variety of oral and written communications.

• 
  Coordinate the personal improvement plans for clients as directed by the principal/principal’s designee

• 
  Maintains accurate data on the students served in ISS and completes required reports

• 
  Engages in follow-up of students leaving ISS to determine progress

• 
  Administers tests, inventories or assignments and returns completed assignments to teachers in a timely manner

• 
  Maintains a physical environment that is conducive to concentrated study with supervision of all student activities

• 
  Conducts self as a role model to the students

• 
  Supervises ISS students and monitors student behavior in the classroom and other locations such as bus and car loading areas, cafeteria, restrooms, halls, classrooms, grounds, and safety drills throughout all curricular and extracurricular activities

• 
  Disciplines misbehavior through approved methods

• 
  Reports discipline problems to teacher or principal

• 
  Reports to supervisor significant change or lack of change in student behavior

• 
  Reconciles minor student conflicts

• 
  Maintains confidentiality in matters pertaining to the student(s) and the class

• 
  Receives training and in-service pertinent to the job function

• 
  Performs other duties as assigned by the principal
