POSITION
: TRANSITION SPECIALIST


LOCATION
: Special Education Department and All School Sites


POSITION SUMMARY
: The Transition Specialist provides diverse services to include: sharing transition information and providing training for Individualized Education Plan (IEP) teams for students age 14 and up; exploring community services and job opportunities available for students with disabilities; working with parents in understanding the Secondary Transition Process; acting as the liaison between adult service providers and Calvert County Public Schools (CCPS); attending IEP meetings and assisting in developing/implementing IEPs.

EDUCATION, CERTIFICATION AND EXPERIENCE
:

At the time of application, the candidate must hold or be eligible for:

  • A Maryland Standard Professional Teacher Certificate or Advanced Professional Certificate in appropriate subject area.
  • Experience as a secondary special education teacher preferred.
  • Experience working with students with complex support needs
  • Possess a valid driver’s license and motor vehicle insurance.

KNOWLEDGE, ABILITIES AND SKILLS: These are pre-employment knowledge, abilities, and skills that apply to the Essential Job Functions. At the time of employment, the candidate must have:

  • Demonstrated ability in written and oral communication.
  • Demonstrated ability to relate effectively to students, teachers, staff, central office personnel, parents and community members.
  • Knowledge of disabilities and accommodations/supports to access the general education curriculum.
  • Knowledge of the IEP process and an understanding of the content of IEPs.
  • Knowledge of educational and psychological assessments.
  • Ability to develop IEPs with measurable goals and objectives related to the Secondary Transition Process, specific to the post-secondary goal outcomes (employment, independent living, education, and training).
  • Excellent human relations skills.
  • Ability to exercise good judgment in making decisions.
  • Proven ability to carry an assignment to its completion.
  • Demonstrated success in accomplishing tasks akin to the responsibilities listed below.
  • Such alternatives to the above qualifications as the Calvert County Public Schools may find appropriate and acceptable.


ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS, RESPONSIBILITIES, AND DUTIES
:

  • Develop and maintain current linkages with adult/community services.
  • Recruit and develop job sites for students with disabilities.
  • Recruit, train, and schedule job coaches as needed.
  • Recruit, train, and work closely with job developer(s).
  • Consult with IEP Chairpersons and teams on issues related to transitioning youth.
  • Maintain current knowledge on transition trends at the national and state level.
  • Provide professional development for special education staff related to the Secondary Transition Process.
  • Attend meetings at the Maryland State Department of Education as they relate to the Secondary Transition Process for students with disabilities.
  • Train school-based personnel on the use of computer programs related to the Secondary Transition Process (e.g., MSDE MDIEP, Transition apps).
  • Coordinate with other departments as needed regarding data management.
  • Assist with writing and managing grants for the Secondary Transition.
  • Work during summer months or evenings as necessary.
  • Thinks, concentrates, and interacts with others.
  • Comes to work promptly every day.
  • Works flexible hours as necessary.
  • Works under stress and meets all deadlines.
  • Travels from school to school as necessary.


OTHER JOB DUTIES
: Duties listed are not intended to be all inclusive nor limit duties that might reasonably be assigned. Performs related work as required or assigned by the Director and Supervisors of Special Education.

:

Position requires significant periods of standing and walking and is performed in a typical school environment.


UNUSUAL DEMANDS
: Must comply with all state and federal regulations for special education; may be subject to a flexible work schedule.


FLSA STATUS
: Exempt


TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT
: Eleven (11) month position and salary commensurate with qualifications and experience applied to the current Calvert County Public Schools salary schedule for teachers. All employees are encouraged to have automatic payroll deposit.


EVALUATION
: Performance will be evaluated in accordance with the policy on evaluation as established by the Calvert County Public Schools.


EFFECTIVE DATE OF POSITION
: 2023-2024 school year

References must be directly related to educational experience and must include immediate supervisor.

Employment is conditional upon successful completion of a drug screen. Current employees of the Calvert County Public Schools are exempt from these requirements.
