As a member of the team supporting the UCSF’s Wynton Shared Research Computing environment, this Systems Administrator ("SA") will work closely with the Wynton architectural leaders and systems administrators to provide systems automation, DevOps, and user support for research computing involving both PHI and non-PHI data. The SA will collaborate with UCSF researchers and scientists to advance cutting-edge research projects by enabling and optimizing their application pipelines for Data Science and graphics GPU processing in the Wynton HPC environment. The SA will help manage Information Commons ("IC") computing environment and help with use cases that require integration between the Wynton HPC environment and cloud environments such as AWS

Applies skills as a seasoned, experienced systems infrastructure professional with a full understanding of industry best practices and campus, medical center or Office of the President policies and procedures to resolve a wide range of issues that are moderately complex in scope. Selects methods and techniques to obtain solutions. Evaluates new technologies including performing simple to moderate cost / benefit analyses.

This position requires onsite support on a regular basis. 80% remote, 20% onsite.

Please note: The compensation ranges listed online for roles not covered by a bargaining unit agreement are very wide, however a job offer will typically fall in the range of 80% - 120% of the established mid-point. An offer will take into consideration the experience of the final candidate AND the current salary level of individuals working at UCSF in a similar role.

For roles covered by a bargaining unit agreement, there will be specific rules about where a new hire would be placed on the range.

Department Description

This position will report into the Academic Research System team. This group is responsible for the development and support of the data and systems that support UCSF’s research mission
UCSF IT Field Services has a client base of 38,000 computers. Information Systems Analyst will be a client/system engineer in the IT Field Services Engineering group. Information Systems Analyst will be responsible for daily operational engineering tasks in support of the enterprise program. Information Systems Analyst will also participate in the development and implementation of engineering projects, identified and created by the Client Engineering Supervisor.

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in related area and / or equivalent experience / training.
  • Experience providing direct user support and customer service with demonstrated success
  • Experience monitoring and optimizing the performance of scientific applications in an HPC cluster
  • Experience working in a production environment providing systems administration/engineering support for clinical/health sciences systems and familiar with data security and compliance for HIPAA
  • Five years of experience with systems automation scripting in at least one of the following: bash, perl, python, puppet, ansible
  • Linux systems administration experience including: automated OS provisioning, software updates and package management, user accounts management, filesystems and access management, compiling software and kernel modules, versioning, environment modules
  • Experience with containers (e.g. Docker, Singularity)
  • Experience with bioinformatics programming and life sciences research
  • Ability to elicit and communicate technical and non-technical information in a clear and concise manner.
  • Self-motivated and works independently and as part of a team. Demonstrates problem-solving skills. Able to learn effectively and meet deadlines.
  • Basic knowledge of how to apply technologies and systems to meet business needs.
  • Ability to write technical documentation in a clear and concise manner.
  • Understanding of system performance monitoring and actions that can be taken to improve or correct performance.
  • Knowledge of the design, development and application of technology and systems to meet business needs.
  • General knowledge of other areas of IT. Thorough understanding of and experience with systems-related issues and actions that can be taken to improve or correct performance.
  • Demonstrated skills associated with adapting equipment and technology to serve user needs. Demonstrated comprehensive understanding of how system management actions affect other systems, system users and dependent / related functions.
  • Demonstrated experience writing and editing complex scripts used to perform system maintenance and administration.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience with configuring, deploying and managing batch queueing systems for HPC clusters such as SGE, LSF, or Slurm
  • Experience with distributed file systems for HPC clusters (such as BeeGFS)
  • Five years of experience working in a systems developer / programmer using at least one of the following: Python, R, Spark-SQL
  • Experience with installation and integration of tools and software (such as compilers, scientific applications) in a shared cluster environment (e.g. modules)
  • Proficiency with using source code version control systems for continuous integration and testing methods (e.g. git, svn)
  • Experience with MySQL: installation, data extracts and loads
  • Experience with developing systems monitoring dashboards (e.g. Grafana, Prometheus, Tableau) and using monitoring tools (e.g. Nagios, Ganglia)
  • Familiar with HIPAA compliant services
  • MS or PhD with adequate understanding of the challenges associated with the data analytics needed to answer scientific questions and also the capabilities and limitations of an HPC cluster and distributed file systems
