SUMMARY
Plans and coordinates youth services and programs within established guidelines

Example of Duties

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following:

Plans and implements a variety of programs and services for children and young adults

Presents weekly literature-based storytime for appropriate audience

Maintains and monitors children’s and young adult collections; selects materials, weeds collection and creates displays

Plans and implements system-wide programs, such as summer reading program, BrazCon and others

Provides youth reference and reader’s advisory service

Develops a highly-visible outreach program for youth services in the community, including schools and other organizations

Creates and implements a marketing and social media presence for youth programs and services

Works with the branch lead to develop budget requests

Organizes and coordinates teen volunteer programs

Attends bi-monthly youth meetings and acts as liaison between the branch and the youth coordinators

Maintains awareness of current trends in youth literature and services

Identifies educational needs in the community, and plans and provides services accordingly

Interprets and implements library policies and procedures for library users and staff

Attends and participates in professional activities, conferences and committees

Maintains awareness of professional trends, methods and ethics

Performs branch duties as needed, including but not limited to:


  • assisting patrons with computer use and printing
  • circulating materials
  • shelving

Performs other duties as needed

Regular attendance is required

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES
Supervises youth assistant; acts as assistant manager in the absence of branch librarian and assistant branch librarian; carries out any/all supervisory responsibilities in accordance with the organization's policies and applicable laws and by pre-defined principles and guidelines as outlined by supervisor

QUALIFICATIONS

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE

Bachelor's Degree (B. S.) from an accredited four-year college or university, and at least three years library experience in the areas of supervision, reference, collection development and community relations


LANGUAGE SKILLS

Ability to read, analyze, and interpret general business periodicals, professional journals and technical procedures; ability to write reports, business correspondence, and procedure manuals; ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from groups of managers, library staff, county employees, and the general public


MATHEMATICAL SKILLS

Ability to work with mathematical concepts such as probability and statistical inference; ability to apply concepts such as fractions, percentages, ratios, and proportions to practical situations


REASONING ABILITY

Ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions; ability to interpret an extensive variety of technical instructions in written or diagram form and deal with several abstract and concrete variables


ADDITIONAL SKILLS AND QUALIFICATIONS

Skill in effectively meeting with and dealing with the general public

Skill in working with automated library systems

Skill in composing and drafting letters, memoranda and other correspondence

Strong organizational skills, good interpersonal skills and supervisory skills

Ability to solve problems

Ability to work independently

Must provide own safe automobile for transportation in carrying out job duties

This job takes place within a library environment and in an automobile on county roads and streets. Inside the libraries the noise level is very low. The noise level can be loud while driving on the roads and streets. Outside weather conditions may fluctuate from extremely hot (above 90 degrees) to cold (below 30 degrees.) In outdoor conditions, employee may frequently be exposed to high humidity, hot sun light and/or rain, hazardous road conditions and gasoline fumes. In outdoor conditions, employee may occasionally be exposed to hail, sleet, and/or snow.

SAFETY RECOMMENDATIONS/REQUIREMENTS
The incumbent in this job must be knowledgeable about and follow the county's safety policies and procedures. Ask supervisor for details. Employee must follow safety road signs, maintain safe speed and drive cautiously at all times, paying strict attention to road conditions and maintaining alertness while operating county automobile.
