ANNOUNCEMENT OF POSITION VACANCY
SUMMARY: currently searching for a motivated Resident Counselor to work in the Upward Bound Program.
ABOUT US: As the largest employer of students on the Cal Poly Pomona campus, the Foundation offers valuable work experience and hands-on training to approximately 1,500 Cal Poly Pomona students each year. The Foundation offers positions in various fields; whether it is in the area of technology, science, retail, culinary arts, hospitality1500 management, leadership or research grants, these student employees participate in Cal Poly Pomona's learn-by-doing philosophy and acquire practical skills in their designated field of study.
The Foundation also contributes operating support to nearly 1,100 Foundation and scholarship programs every year, including Bronco Athletics and the Norman J. Priest Scholarship. In addition, the Foundation administers grants and contracts, contributes to campus security, and supports several university publications. The Foundation contributes over $1 million annually to Cal Poly Pomona.
SOME OF THE THINGS THAT YOU WILL GET TO DO (this is just a small sampling of work variety):
The successful incumbent will supervise a minimum of 10 Upward Bound summer participants at all times (i.e., during classroom instruction, recreational activities, workshops, etc.) for the duration of the UB six-week summer program. The incumbent will also tutor students in core curriculum courses which include: English, math, science, foreign language, etc. Additionally, the resident counselor will commute with the summer participants on the bus daily (June 19 – July 7) and if resident counselors need to reside in the Cal Poly Pomona campus for the duration of the three-week UB summer residential program (July 10 – July 28), housing will be available (except on weekends) and are responsible for developing residential life activities.
MINIMUM EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:
- Currently enrolled undergraduate college student (not limited to Cal Poly Pomona students)
- Good academic standing
- Working with high school students in an educational or residential setting
- Tutoring in various high school subjects or supervising adolescents
PREFERRED:
- Upper division standing
- Conflict resolution/management skills
- Knowledge of or background w/TRIO programs or other educational equity programs
- Exp. with education or training in child/adolescent development, peer counseling/mentoring, or crisis intervention
WE OFFER:
- A summer residential counselor temporary assignment
- One week of training June 13 – 16, three weeks commuter and three weeks in residence, excluding weekends (July 10 – July 28, 2023) paid bi-weekly for seven weeks, starting salary $15.50/hour, plus room and board for three weeks (if needed)
- Training will include First Aid and CPR certification and Cal Poly Pomona UB policies on sexual harassment, mandated reporting, and the regulations of working with minors
- Resident counselor will be on-call five days a week (Monday through Friday), 40 hours per week maximum during the commuter program and 54 hours maximum for the duration of the three-week residential program
