UW Medicine’s IT Services department has an outstanding opportunity for a Research Data Analyst!

In collaboration with UW Medicine IT Services (‘ITS’) and under the general guidance of the Research IT Assistant Director, the primary focus of the Research Data Analyst (“Data Analyst”) position is building and maintaining basic to intermediate level technology, tools and solutions for the OnCore Clinical Trials Management System (CTMS) datasets and other computing environments within Research IT. This individual will be responsible for the day-to-day, fast-paced, reporting/data analyst needs that include managing data access via reports, maintaining SQL queries, and database tasks/functions. These solutions may be implemented in SQL Server Reporting Services (SSRS), and/or other technologies and frameworks.

Areas of responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
  • providing immediate response to basic to intermediate level data-related questions, ad-hoc Tableau and SQL reports, and developing and/or updating business logic reports;

  • maintaining continuity of data, delivery, and connections;

  • facilitating timely changes on preexisting logic to provide more immediate availability;

  • investigating basic to intermediate level data connection issues, prioritizing, and resolving via defined service level agreements;

  • aligning with larger program office process to deliver services and communicating CTMS Program Office priorities to RIT leadership;

  • performing tier 1 and lower-end tier 2 support tickets;

  • participating in Program Office process meetings to fully understand context when working under the advisement of and being mentored by senior analysts.


  • RESPONSIBILITIES

    Basic Reporting and Data Access Requirements (40%)
  • Develop basic SQL logic, queries, and reports.

  • Provide more immediate availability for changes to be made quickly on already developed logic.

  • Modify existing reports.

  • Perform database investigations.

  • Investigate OnCore app functionality and mapping to datastores.


  • Intermediate Reporting and Data Access Requirements (35%)
  • Perform basic to intermediate level project analysis and planning, including feasibility studies and documenting end user requirements.

  • Provide ongoing basic to intermediate level systems and user support.

  • Exercise basic to intermediate level technical and organizational skills to initiate, carry out, and complete successful development and maintenance projects.

  • Exercise initiative, follow-up, and effective prioritization in performing and coordinating tasks.

  • Generate new SQL code for reports connected to CTMS Program Office Process, maintaining code standards.


  • Basic to Intermediate Level Quality Assurance and Monitoring (15%)
  • Perform basic to intermediate level quality assurance testing through all phases of software development to ensure that high-quality work products are delivered.

  • Thoroughly test and document basic to intermediate level operational processes, including report validation and deployment.

  • Monitor and report application access to comply with HIPAA requirements.

  • Participate in all aspects of improving the team, including education/training of other team members and contributing to process/communication improvement initiatives.

  • Work with manager to set professional goals for career development.

  • Act as back-up for other team members and functions, as needed.


  • REQUIREMENTS

    Bachelor’s Degree in Computer Science, Health Information Systems, Math, Information Technology, Business Administration, or related field or equivalent combination of education/experience.

    2+ year(s) of recent healthcare or IT experience, including:
  • 2+ year(s) of experience with end user support in an IT domain.

  • 1+ year(s) of experience with application/system configuration and implementation of clinical information systems (and/or healthcare applications).

  • Familiarity with Oracle and SQL Server database programming, including complex query optimization and performance tuning.

  • Demonstrated experience with formal software engineering practices (e.g. source code version control, validation, deployment, maintaining Microsoft-based applications, etc.)

  • Basic object-oriented programming skills using an integrated development environment like Visual Studio .NET.

  • Demonstrated experience with requirements gathering and analysis, including direct work with end users or customers.

  • Basic understanding of database design.

  • Demonstrated problem solving and debugging skills.

  • Foundational experience working with multiple APIs.


  • DESIRED
  • Previous experience in and knowledge of academic healthcare systems and/or operational environments.

  • Advanced degree (e.g., Master’s, PhD, etc.).

  • SQL development experience.

  • Training in data warehouse development and reporting, as well as business intelligence tools.

  • Experience with healthcare and/or clinical data; knowledge of hospital operations and clinical procedures.

  • Programming skills in SQL Server Integration Services (SSIS).

  • Understanding of HIPAA regulations and/or Human Subjects regulations for clinical research.

  • Experience with web programming languages such as ASP.Net, Model/View/Controller architectures, JavaScript, and JQuery.

  • Experience with developing/managing IT applications and systems in a healthcare setting.

  • Experience with clinical data for application to medical research.

  • Experience with medical ontologies such as SnoMed, ICD-9/10, or CPT.


  • This is an Information Technology deadline-driven work environment.
  • The individual in this position is expected to work normal daytime hours. The majority of work is performed in an office environment during normal business hours; however, significant off-hours and weekends may be needed to resolve problems and respond to emergencies. This individual is expected to be available for emergencies (business continuity/disaster recovery efforts) on a 24x7 basis as needed.
  • Must coordinate projects without direct supervisory authority.
  • Must work within the constraints of multiple technical environments.
  • ITS provides services to all UW Medicine organizations – HMC, UWMC-Montlake, UWMC-NW, VMC, UWNC, UWP, SOM, and ALNW. The individual in this position must learn many organizational structures and cultures and continually foster collaboration.
